The woods slipped into a black as ink. On the damp earth, at the foot of an ancient oak, an old manArthur Whitbyhunched, his breath shallow, his hands trembling from the cold, his eyes brimming with hopelessness. His own children, Thomas and Lucy, had dragged him there and left him as if he were rubbish.
They had spent years biding their time for his death. The inheritancea sprawling manor, acres of pasture, and a tidy sum of £250,000was theirs by right. Yet the old man would not pass on. So they chose a quicker route: they abandoned him in the heart of the lonely forest, without food or water, hoping wild beasts would finish the job and the constabulary would call it a tragic accident.
Arthur, propped against the trunk, shivered at every rustle. Far off the wind moaned, and between its whistles a wolfs howl slipped through. He knew the end was drawing near.
Lord, will it truly end like this? he whispered, clasping his hands in prayer.
A branch snapped. Then another. Footsteps approached. Arthur tried to rise, but his limbs refused. His gaze searched the gloom until, suddenly, a shape emerged from the underbrusha wolf.
The creature moved slowly along the path, its coat shimmering in the pale moonlight, its eyes glowing like twin coals. It bared its teeth and drew nearer.
This is it, Arthur thought.
He closed his eyes and began to pray aloud, bracing for the bite of those sharp fangs. Yet something unimaginable unfolded.
The wolf did not lunge. It stepped beside him, halted, then lowered its head and let out a soft, almost conversational howl.
Arthur, bewildered, reached out his hand. To his astonishment the animal did not recoil; instead it allowed his fingers to brush the thick fur.
A memory surged. Years earlier, when his strength still held, he had found a young wolf caught in a hunters snare deep within the woods. Without fear, risking his own life, he pried the cruel steel apart and set the creature free. The wolf fled without a backward glance yet apparently never forgot.
Now that solitary predator bowed to him as to a saviour. The wolf crouched even lower, sending a clear message: climb on.
With what little vigor he possessed, Arthur clutched the animals neck. The wolf rose and carried him through the shadowed forest. He heard branches snap beneath its paws, saw silhouettes of other beasts flit nearby, but none dared come near.
After several miles a glow appeared ahead: a village. The townsfolk, hearing the sudden barking, rushed out and beheld an astonishing sighta massive wolf gently setting the frail, alive old man down before the doorway.
When Arthur finally stood under a roof, surrounded by kind villagers, tears burst from his eyesnot from fear, but from the dawning realisation that a beast had shown more humanity than his own children ever could.
