Thirty Years On, Lisa Attends Her Alumni Reunion to Thank Her Beloved Teacher; the Emotional Gathering Brings Back the Boys from Her Parallel Class, and She Stares in Shock When She Spots Victor—Her Former Secret School Crush—Now a Tall, Silver‑Haired Gentleman with a Trimmed Beard, and Even More Astonished When a Familiar Face Walks Toward Her.

Emily had been invited to the thirtyyear reunion of her secondary school. Shed decided to turn up, mainly to pay her respects to the beloved teacher whod shaped her youth. The gathering turned out to be touching. From the parallelclassroom cohort came a group of lads, and when Emily saw Victor, her heart leapt. He was the same tall, silvertempled man with a neat goatee who had once been the mischievous schoolboy shed secretly adored. The school hall buzzed with chatter. After the polite greetings, everyone lingered in clusters, talking and laughing. Emily froze in astonishment when she saw who was heading her way.

Emily had always considered herself the least conspicuous girl in her classat least thats how she saw herself. She watched, with a pinch of envy, the blonde, blueeyed classmates who seemed to command attention.

Darling, youll blossom yet, her mother would soothe her. I didnt look like a lady until I was well past sixteen. So take your timeyoull still capture the hearts of boys. Youre still so young

Mother, Im certainly not in any hurry, Emily would reply, lowering her lashes, though her green eyes gave her away.

She stared at her reflection, sighing. Shed long been smitten with Victor, the sporty, tall, jolly lad from the neighbouring class. His bravado on the playground, his reckless pranks, seemed more like unchecked impetuosity than true courage.

Watching the boys basketball drill at P.E., Emily kept her eyes on Victor. His enthusiasm electrified the whole team, and they invariably won. Even if Victor werent strikingly handsome, Emily would have liked him anyway, but his dazzling presence left a shy girl like her with no chance of befriending the team captain.

Around him swirled a steady stream of friendsboth lads and lassesmaking it impossible for anyone to break through. He was never alone, always amid a crowd. Yet even brief hallway encounters on break gave Emily a quiet thrill, while also feeding the insecurity that gnawed at her.

Whenever she found herself near Victor, the moment she glanced his way shed look away. She never confessed her childhood crush to anyone, yet she felt the whole world knew her secret. She blushed at the thought of classmates teasing her, or worse, Victor himself.

So Emily resolved to forget the handsome one, to ignore him and banish him from her thoughts. At first it was hard, but with a stubborn will she calmed herself and even felt a quiet pride. The key is to stay clear of him, she whispered to herself. Whenever she spotted him at school shed turn the other way or slip past, ducking behind other pupils.

Two years passed. Emily studied hard, grew taller, and shed much of the shyness that had once defined her. Her mothers prophecy proved trueby the end of one summer Emily had become a graceful, slender young woman. After Year8 she moved on to a technical college.

She learned of Victors fate and that of their former classmates only through occasional chats with her old formteacher, Mrs. Margaret Clarke, who lived on the same street as Emily. Emily never attended the schoolnight gatherings; her class never quite formed a closeknit circle, and she had few school friends.

One evening, however, a reunion was arranged in honour of Mrs. Clarkes jubilee. Emily decided to go, eager to greet the teacher whod meant so much to her. After all, thirty years had slipped by since their graduation.

The reunion was heartfelt; many faces that hadnt met since the school benches were brought together. The lads from the parallel class arrived, and Emilys breath caught when she saw Victor againtall, dignified, silvertinged hair, a tidy goatee. He bore a striking resemblance to the cheeky schoolboy she remembered, his eyes still sparkling with mischief.

The assembly hall rang with noise. After the speeches dedicated to Mrs. Clarke, groups clustered, hugging and chatting. Emily could hardly believe it when Victor walked straight toward her.

Arent you the secret schoolyard crush? he said, grinning broadly, as he extended a hand and planted a gentle kiss on her wrist. It felt as though no decades had passed. Emilys cheeks flushed.

Love? Me? she laughed, bewildered. Why am I hearing this now?

They both chuckled. Of course, by now they each had families and childrenVictor, a son; Emily, a daughter.

Victor talked about his job, his family, and his boy, Tom. I have a son too, Emily replied, a soft sigh escaping her. Just as Id always hoped.

She looked at him, then asked, Tell me, why? Why did I catch your eye back then? I was quiet, modest, and not particularly pretty

It was exactly that, Victor answered thoughtfully. You never chased after me like everyone else. You walked past with your head held high. I never imagined I could approach someone as proud as you. Yet I was drawn to that very pride. Now its just a sweet memory of youth.

Emily smiled, I felt the same, though I never could push through your crowd. I never got the chance to be the first to speak. It was all just a childs crush, after all.

Who knows, Victor mused, perhaps we missed something along the way.

Maybe, Emily laughed, perhaps well meet again in the next life.

Ill be looking for your green eyes, Victor whispered, a melancholy smile curling his lips. His gaze lingered on her, a mix of astonishment, tenderness, and confusion.

Just then a young man squeezed through the crowd, calling out, Mum! Dads on his way, just as you asked

Emily introduced him, This is my son, Tom.

Victor shook Toms hand warmly. Victor Harrison, he said, extending his broad palm. The look in his eyes softened as he turned back to Emily, a blend of surprise and affection.

Emily waved him off and headed for the exit. At the schools doorway Victor caught up to her.

Listen, Emily, he said, eyes glistening. Thank you

For what? Emily asked, puzzled.

For my son. Another Victor is growing up now. Thank you for the memory.

She nodded, slipped into the car, and took a seat in the back. Her husband asked, How did it go?

Fine, she replied. A lot of people turned up. It was nice to see old faces, a little sad too. Time changes us all. Im glad for Mrs. Clarkeshe was a wonderful teacher. May God keep her healthy for many more generations of pupils. As the car eased onto the quiet suburban street, the evening sky painted itself in bruised purples, and Emily felt a gentle tug at the back of her thoughtsa mixture of nostalgia and relief. She glanced at the tiny hand gripping the seat beside her, Toms eyes bright with the same curious spark she once saw in Victors own son when they had first met. The boy whispered, Did you really know him? and she smiled, realizing that the story of a secret crush was now a story she could hand down, a quiet thread linking generations.

Inside, the soft hum of the engine seemed to echo the faint laughter from the hall, the clink of glasses, the rustle of old photographs. Emily turned to her husband, his gaze warm, and said, Sometimes the chapters we think we left unfinished become the footnotes that guide us forward. He squeezed her shoulder, and together they watched the lights of the neighborhood flicker on, each one a reminder that lifes little moments, however fleeting, linger longer than we expect.

Later that night, after Tom was tucked into bed, Emily sat at her kitchen table, a cup of tea steaming beside an old photo album. She opened to a faded picture of a teenage girl, shy and greeneyed, standing beside a lanky boy with a mischievous grin. She traced the outline of Victors smile with her thumb, feeling gratitude for the years that had taken her far from that hallway and back to it, just to see how far love in all its shapeshad traveled. With a soft sigh, she whispered to the empty room, Thank you, for the memory that made us who we are. The house settled around her, and the future, bright with Toms laughter and the possibility of new friendships with Victors son, seemed to hum with the promise that every ending carries the seed of another beginning.
