She walked into the hospital alone, with no one by her side through labor — but the moment her baby was born, the doctor took one look at her and saw something that brought him to tears.

Right, so you have to hear this. Poppy arrived at the hospital completely by herself — there was nobody with her through the whole birth. Her husband had left her a few months earlier, right after he’d found out she was pregnant.

The labour went on for hours, but eventually the baby’s first little cries filled the room. Everything had gone smoothly, and the baby was totally healthy.

Dr. Whitmore took the little boy gently in his arms, ready to hand him over to Poppy, when something strange happened. He stopped. His hands were trembling slightly. He looked at the newborn’s face, then at Poppy’s, and his eyes welled up with tears.

‘Doctor, is everything all right?’ Poppy asked, panic in her voice.

He nodded, but for a few seconds he couldn’t speak. Then, in a voice that cracked, he whispered something that left Poppy frozen on the spot.

And this is the part that really gets me. Dr. Whitmore had noticed a tiny birthmark on the baby’s arm. He recognised it at once — it was exactly the same as the one his own son had. That son had disappeared years ago, and he’d lost all contact with him since.

His heart sank.

Poppy saw him staring, and she asked, worried, what was going on. Dr. Whitmore took a deep breath, his eyes still full of tears, and explained that the birthmark matched his son’s exactly. Which meant the baby was his grandson.

Poppy felt the world tilt around her.

All the loneliness of giving birth on her own just melted away, replaced by a deep, overwhelming emotion. She held her son tightly against her chest, while Dr. Whitmore stood there, moved to his core, realising that this tiny baby had just repaired a bond that had been broken for years.
