A Heart Divided: Betrayal and Redemption in a Woman’s Journey

Broken Heart: Betrayal and Salvation in a Womans Life
Long ago, in a town beside the Tagus River, lived a woman named Beatriz. Her tale was one of bravery and fresh starts, defined by a love that promised much but never delivered.
Miguel, Im pregnant! Beatriz declared the moment she stepped through the door, leaving no room for doubt. Miguel halted, glanced aside and sighed: Well if its already happened he replied, planting a quick kiss on her cheek, as if trying to mask his feelings.
Beatriz had fallen for Miguel while she was still a student at the University of Coimbra. He worked in the office where she was interning. Handsome, ambitious, already a subdepartment headhe seemed from another world. A modest girl from Alentejo never imagined he would notice her. Yet on the last day, he approached her, offered a box of pastéis de nata and invited her to dinner. Thus their romance began.
During that first meeting, he confessed he had grown up without parents. His mother remarried and left, leaving him with his grandmother. Beatriz did not reveal that her own parents had never paid her any attention. Her childhood had been cold and lonely, lacking affection. Both knew solitude, and perhaps that is why they bonded so quickly.
A month later, Beatriz moved into Miguels rented flat. Soon after came the weddingsimple, without a party, but full of hope. They dreamed of a house, a peaceful life. Only one issue divided them: children. She wanted them; he kept postponing. Were fine as we are; why rush?
When the test came back positive, she hesitated to tell him, fearing his reaction. One day she gathered her courage.
Were going to be parents, are you happy? she asked.
I thought it would be later he answered, his disappointment plain.
At the first ultrasound he stayed in the car, refusing to join. She emerged with tears and joy in her eyes twins. Two hearts beating inside her.
Twins?! Miguel froze. We never planned this. You have to abort.
What are you saying?! I saw our children I cant Beatriz sobbed.
She waited for him to accept, to understand. Instead, he kept pulling away, criticizing her body and claiming she was no longer the same. She tried to ignore it. When the babies were born, the tension worsened.
Tózinho and Mariathe twinsbecame her whole world. Miguel? He arrived late, shied away from helping. She endured, for the sake of the children, for love, for family.
When the kids turned one and a half, she mentioned returning to work. Miguel sat at the table, eyes on the floor.
Youll find out anyway Ive found someone else. Im leaving. I wont abandon them, but I want to live with her.
Beatriz felt a chill.
You swore youd never be like your parents! she wept.
He left. At first he still appeared occasionally, then vanished completely. She was left alone, penniless, without support. Return to the village? No jobs. Stay? No home.
Her boss stepped in, securing a room for her in a hostel. A small, unfinished space, two kidsshe managed to survive. One day, as she pushed the stroller down the street, a voice called out:
Let me help. Im João. I live nearby.
He offered assistance without asking, later proposing to fix the house. He began picking up the children from daycare. At first she was wary, but gradually João became part of her life.
It was steady and simple. He, too, had been betrayedhis wife had left him for a friend when she discovered he couldnt have children. The two children he cared for as his own were all he had left.
When he proposed to Beatriz, she refused.
I have children. Youll find a woman whos free.
I want to stay with you. Theyre not a burden; theyre my family.
They married. A week later, Miguel reappeared.
Beatriz, forgive me. I understand everything now. Lets start over
Its too late. Im married. My children have a real father now.
João stepped out from the corner.
Meet my husband.
Miguel turned, waved his hand and walked away forever.
A year passed. Beatriz and João bought a home. What became of Miguel? She didnt know, and didnt want to. Because happiness lies not in promises, but in those who stay.
