A Surprising Run-in at the Market with My Ex-Mother-in-Law: Shes Unrecognisable!
Last Saturday at the market, I bumped into my ex-mother-in-law. Shed changed so muchlooked older, worn out. I rushed over, said hello, and we got chatting about life. She didnt complain about her son, but I could tell straight away things were rough. After a bit, she said goodbye but kept insisting I call her the next day. I feel awful for herI lived in her house for ten years and was treated well. Then her son brought home a new wife, saying shed be better than me.
My husband and I lived with his mum for a decade. James always said we didnt need to buy a place because his mum had no one else, and the house would be ours eventually. The way he said it rubbed me the wrong wayit just felt off. But once I moved in, I realised his mum was lovely, really kind-hearted and warm.
After we married, James changed completely towards me. Even having our son didnt bring us closer. It never felt like a real marriage. The only person I could talk to honestly was his mum. Out of respect, I never badmouthed him, but she understood everything. She helped me raise our boytook him to nursery, then school, always cooked for us.
Ten years passed, and out of nowhere, James announced he wanted a divorce. Said he wasnt leaving the house because it was his, and I should be the one to go. For the first time ever, his mum stepped in, begging him to reconsider, to think about our son. But it was no usehis mind was made up. So I packed my things and left. He moved his new wife in straight away. I ended up renting a room from an older lady.
Moneys tight nowI barely make enough to get by. My son and I share a room in someone elses house. The landlady isnt cruel, but shes difficultalways finding fault, never happy. Weve started eating meals in our room just to avoid her.
Then, at the local market, I saw my ex-mother-in-law again. Her eyes were so sad. She didnt say a word against James, but I could tell she wasnt happy at home either. We had a proper talk, and she asked me to call her. Id take her in if I couldwed look after each other. Shes a good soul. But I havent even got a proper place for myself. What am I supposed to do?
