“I’ll Get Straight to It—I’m Your Husband’s Mistress! We’ve Been Seeing Each Other All These Years. Yes, Don’t Look So Shocked…” Julia Was Making Dinner, Waiting for Alex to Come Home in an Hour. Their Ten-Year-Old Daughter Karina Was at Dance Practice. Karina Would Be Home Soon, Drop Her Bag, and Sit Down, Eager to Chat About Friends and Her Day, As Julia Smiled Listening. But When the Doorbell Rang Early, It Wasn’t Karina Forgetting Her Keys—It Was a Young Woman. “I Won’t Drag This Out. I’m Your Husband’s Mistress. We’ve Been Together for Years. Don’t Act So Surprised.” How Many Years? “Three. It Suited Me—Living Alone, No Strings, a Man Who Comes and Goes. No Chores, No Cooking, No Cleaning. And I Don’t Plan on Changing Anything—Except Now I’m Pregnant. An Accident, But It’s Too Late to Change That.” Julia Recalled the Struggles to Become a Mum—It Had Only Worked After IVF Twice, Resulting in Karina. Now This Bombshell. “So You Think You’ll Just Have a Man and Baby Who Come and Go?” “Exactly. I Never Wanted a Child, but Here We Are.” Alex Had Always Said He Couldn’t Have Kids. “Well, Apparently He Can! I Need to See Where My Baby Will Grow Up. It’s Only Right.” Julia Stood Her Ground: “Miss, I Don’t Even Know Your Name and Don’t Care. Your Man Doesn’t Live Here Anymore—Take His Things. The Rest Doesn’t Concern Me.” Karina Overheard Everything. “Mum, What Was That About? Am I Not Dad’s Daughter?” So Julia Told Her the Truth—About IVF, About How Much They Both Waited for Her. When Alex Came Home, He Found Frosty Silence and an Empty Welcome. Julia Broke the News: “Your Mistress Was Here. She’s Pregnant—With Your Child. I shant beat about the bush. Im your husbands mistress. Weve been seeing each other for yearsyes, its true. Dont look so shocked and please, dont faint
I remember those distant evenings when Julia would prepare supper, expecting her husband, Alexander, home in an hour. Their ten-year-old daughter, Grace, was off at her weekly ballet lesson.
Grace would usually arrive within the half hour, toss her satchel onto the hall table, and take her place at the dinner table, eager for her meal. She would chatter about her friends, achievements, and her new dance instructor. Julia used to smile; she always enjoyed listening to her daughters stories.
That evening, the doorbell rang. It was far too early for Alexanderbesides, he had a key. Julia assumed Grace had forgotten hers again. But when Julia opened the door, a young woman stood there, not her daughter.
Ill come straight to the point. Im your husbands mistress. Weve been together for years. Yesdont be so startled.
How many years? Julia asked, her voice steady.
Weve been seeing each other for three. Its always suited meliving alone, having a man who visits.
No need for any domestic botherno financial ties, no cooking, no cleaning, no fuss. Ive no intention of changing anything.
Id never have come to you, exceptwell, Im in the family way. Bit of an accident, really, but its too late to do anything now.
Julia was taken back to the long months when shed struggled to become a mother. Thered been nothing wrong with her, but Alexander had his difficulties. In the end, theyd turned to IVF. The first attempt failed, but fortune smiled the second time. Julia even hoped for twins, as was common with that method, but Grace was the only one. And now, this?
What do you mean nothing will change? You think a lover who drops in can be a father who does the same?
Not quitenow Ill have a child and a man who visit.
How is that supposed to work? He comes to yours so the child can see its mother, and then back here to us?
Exactly. I never wanted a childthis was a mishap.
And didnt Alexander say he was unable to have children?
Well, clearly he can. I need to see the environment my child will grow up in. Quite reasonable, I think.
My daughter is mine, and you know Alexander helps raise her, even if he isnt her biological father. Now hell have a child who really is his, and itll be on your shoulders, wont it?
Madam, your name means nothing to me, and Im not inviting you in. Your man doesnt live here anymoreyou can come for his things. The rest is your concern, not mine!
Julia moved to close the door, but suddenly Grace hurried up the steps, home from dance class.
Mum, whats going on? Whose baby? And is Dad not really my father?
You heard all that? Well, perhaps its time you knew.
Mum, Im nearly eleven, Im not a baby. Ill understand.
Julia told her everything.
Youre my daughter, and your father loves youhes been your dad on paper since you were born. We waited for you together.
And now hes waiting for another, but you wont be its mother, and I wont be the sisterright?
Well yes, love, thats about the size of it. And, darling youre older now, and Ive decided I dont want to live with Dad anymore.
Ill help you, Mum, dont worry. Let him go to herits alright. I love you, but if that woman wants him, she can have him.
Alexander arrived home right on time.
Whats happened? No ones meeting me, no hugs?
Grace would usually greet her father with open arms, but this time, there was only silence. She stayed in her room.
Julia, wheres Grace? Stayed late at ballet, or is she ill?
Your mistress came round. Shes carrying your child. Care to explain what she was doing here?
Julia try to understand. This is my child. I cant turn my back.
And do you know what shes planning?
I do. She never wanted the baby, but here it is. Grace is ours, and now therell be another childmine. It will come to live with me.
Youre sure about that? Are you even sure its yours? Have you forgotten your own diagnosis?
There are cases exceptions
Well, take your exception to its mother, then. Pack up your things when youre able and go now!
No, Julia, please! Im not wanted there. She doesnt want meonly in a fashion
And now, youre not wanted here, either. Go!
But what about Grace? I may not be her real father, but I have raised her as my own Whats wrong with having my own child here as well, in fairness?
Dont talk to me of fairness. Her mother made that point already. First be sure its yours before you think of such things. Goodbye.
Julia divorced Alexander. He had to go, as the flat was owned by Julias parents, whod never transferred it into her name, though that hardly mattered now.
Alexander found himself with nowhere to go. The part-time man proved no more than a fleeting guest to his mistressshe didnt wish to change her life, nor did she intend to take on the burden of a child. She liked the idea of a baby in principle, but not the sleepless nights, the nappies, the coughs and colds. That, it seemed, was more than she bargained for.
After the child was born, she put in for child support, but she lost the case. No one knows how that little one fares now. Alexanders diagnosis never changed, and the childs paternity was never proven.
On paper, he has only one daughter, but she wants nothing more to do with him. Alexander sends his maintenance payments and tries, time and again, to restore the family, but Julia doesnt wish to see him, either.
So, as weve all learned, its not so easy to straddle two stools with one behind
And what do you make of it, then? Share your thoughts, and dont forget to mark your approval belowPerhaps, in the end, it was Julia and Grace who found the better fortune: evenings undisturbed, laughter shared only between mother and daughter, learning to dance in the living room to the music of their own choosing. Grace grew up with strong steps and a keen memory, her heart steady and sure. Julia watched her daughter spin, her face lit with peace shed long thought lost.
As for Alexander, on certain chill evenings, he would wander past the old building, hands stuffed deep in his coat pockets, the yellow squares of light in the window no longer meant for him. Once Grace caught sight of his silhouette beneath the lamp, but she simply closed the curtain and carried on with her practice.
Julia poured tea, set two cups on the table, and smiled as Grace came to sit beside her. Isnt it strange, Julia mused, looking out at the moon, how the pieces sometimes fall just right, even after the breaking?
Grace nodded, her fingers lightly tapping the rim of her cup. Maybe things are better newwhen you choose your pieces, and how they fit.
And so, their small world spun on: lighter by one person, and infinitely freer; mended not just with time, but with courage born from hurt. They learned, day by day, that love doesnt always mean holding tightsometimes, it means letting go and dancing forward, together, into the arms of their own brightly lit evenings.

Jag förstår inte hur det är möjligt! En mamma gjorde allt för att få sin dotter att försvinna från livet.
