Arthur drifted out of the kitchen and stumbled upon his mother, who was shouting.
My life unravelled in such a way that happiness slipped through my fingers the first time I reached for it. We parted ways before our little Oliver had celebrated his first birthday. Back then, Olivers father barely tried connecting with his son, and I didnt force the matter too much…
When I met Arthur, I was upfront about everything. Told him right away that I had a child. Luckily, Arthur responded swiftly and with understanding. Three-year-old Oliver warmed to him at once, and within months was calling him Dad. Arthur was over the moon. After a time, he proposed, and we became a proper family.
Our homely paradise, however, was threatened by a peculiar shadow. My new husbands mother, Judith, from the very start, seemed to harbour a quiet dislike for both Oliver and me. Judith held the unwavering belief that her beloved son had ended up with a divorced woman with a child.
Whenever Judith visited, not once did she try to speak to Oliver, nor did she offer him as much as a sweet. I never expected my mother-in-law to embrace Oliver as a grandchild, but I had hoped for a little restraint.
Oliver could not fathom why his grandmother was so cross. The tipping point came on one of Judiths visits when she erupted at the little boy. All this fuss because my son, desperate to please her, presented Judith with his favourite toy car.
Arthur stepped out of the kitchen and saw his mother shouting. Take your child away! Surely it should be clear, I dont want him here! she bellowed. Arthur, without uttering a word, guided her towards the door and asked her kindly never to return.
I dont even know what Im supposed to do now. Of course, Im relieved my husband defended Oliver and me, but its hard to stomach that two people I care about clashed because of me. Now, Arthur and I are expecting our own child, yet he doesnt want anything to do with my mother anymore. Im so entangled in this mess that I have no idea how to find my way through it.
