He refused to marry his pregnant girlfriend. Mum backed him, but Dad stood up for the future grandchild.
Dad, I have some news. The neighbours daughter, Emily well, shes pregnant. Its mine I said as soon as I stepped in through the front door.
Peter, my father, paused for a moment before replying, unusually calm:
Well, then marry her.
Are you serious? Im still far too young. Im not ready for all that, besides, we werent even properly together
Really now? Dad let out a dry, bitter sort of laugh. Old enough for a fling, but not old enough to own up to what youve done. Typical. Then he turned and shouted: Linda! Come in here!
Mum came into the kitchen, drying her hands on her tea towel.
Whats going on?
Our sons got Emily the neighbours lass pregnant, and hes refusing to marry her. There you go ask him yourself.
Linda didnt seem surprised. Her face set firmly:
And hes right. Why should we bring anyone into the house just because shes the first who turns up? Girls nowadays know what theyre doing pick someone better-off, end up pregnant, then demand a wedding. You find out the child isnt even yours. He should get a DNA test, and regardless, you cant force Max. Hes young, a lad, and temptations never easy. Were not here to raise someone elses children.
Peter sighed, voice low:
What if the child is really his?
If it is, does that mean were obliged to take responsibility? Tell him to get the test, well see what comes.
She turned back to her pots, leaving Peter alone with me.
You know, I was young once too he began. Loved one, married another. Not for love, but because it was the right thing to do. Because being a man is more than just following your heart its about choices and what comes after. Your mum was expecting. I wasnt sure I could make it work, but the child was blameless. My blood, my conscience. And, Max, despite everything, I never regretted staying.
Three months passed. The DNA test was clear: 99.9% probability, I was the father of Emilys baby.
Well then? Mum huffed when Dad put the paperwork down in front of her. So, hes the father. But Emily wont be living here. Shes not crossing this threshold I said so from the start!
I sat, not meeting my dads gaze. My decision was plain on my face: I sided with Mum. Silent, fists clenched, not a word.
Peter stood slowly from the table.
Since youve both made your choice, its time for mine.
His voice was quiet, steady.
As long as Im alive, my grandchild wont go without. Ill buy somewhere and build, and that child my grandchild will inherit everything I have. From now on, both of you can forget my help. I refuse to be a part of all this nonsense. Max, from today, youre no longer my son. Everything I own will go to the little one. Not a penny for either of you.
Linda erupted:
Are you mad? Youre going to disown your own son?!
Peter didn’t say another word. He walked out the door, ignoring her shouts and curses. I stood rooted in the silence, hardly believing what Dad had done. But deep down, I knew one thing: Peter meant it, and hed see it through.
