Victor Brings His Fiancée Home to Meet the Parents—As Olga Worries She Won’t Make a Good Impression, Victor Reassures Her She’s Perfect. But When They Arrive, His Mother, Mrs. Evelyn Jenkins, Greets Them With Suspicion and Mistakes Olga for a Housekeeper.—“Mum, This Is Olga!” Victor Announces, but Mrs. Jenkins Insists She Was Expecting a Different Fiancée. Confused and Unwelcome, Olga Endures a Day She’ll Remember for the Rest of Her Life

William brought his fiancée home to meet his parents.
What if they dont like me? worried Emily, as they walked through the garden gate of his parents cottage near Oxford.
Thats impossible! Youre the best, William reassured her as he opened the front door.

They were greeted in the hall by Williams mother, Mrs. Evelyn Taylor.
Mum, this is Emily! William introduced cheerfully.
You said you were bringing your fiancée to meet us? his mother remarked, casting a critical eye over Emily.
Well, this is her! William replied with a proud smile.
How odd, Evelyn muttered suspiciously. But this was only the beginninga day Emily would never forget.

Emily had fallen for William the very first time she met him. Tall, fair-haired, with clear blue eyes, William won her heart through his calm, thoughtful ways and gentle spirit. Despite the ten years between them, and the fact that William had already been married before and had a daughter, Emily agreed to marry him without hesitation.

From the moment they stepped inside, Emily felt uneasy under Mrs. Taylors scrutiny.

You said youd introduce us to your fiancée, Evelyn repeated, eyeing Emily up and down.

Well, here she is! William smiled brightly, wrapping an arm around Emily.

Really? Evelyn shrugged with an air of disdain, heading towards the lounge. I just assumed you were hiring a new housekeeper.

Emily shot a nervous glance at William.

Dont mind her, he whispered. Mum doesnt know how to joke kindly.

That evening, Evelyn pretended not to notice Emily at all, focusing instead on regaling William with fond tales of his ex-wife.

Charlotte calls more often than you do, always checking in on your father and me. She popped round just the other day, looking radiant! Brought us the most marvelous cake she baked herselfIve never tasted anything so delicious! Evelyn rolled her eyes heavenward, then shot Emily a haughty glance. Charlotte always did have a magic touch in the kitchen.

Emilys a wonderful cook, too, William replied warmly, slipping an arm around Emily.

Is that so? Evelyn replied with such measured condescension that Emily wanted nothing more than to leave. And where will you two live? You know, Will, I turned your old room into a walk-in wardrobe for myself, so

Dont worry, Mum. Emily has her own flat, William said, deftly steering their goodbyes.

I dont think they like me, Emily told William once theyd left.

Youre overthinking. Charlotte is the daughter of my fathers old friendDad and Mr. Edwards go all the way back and run the family business together. They always wanted me and Charlotte matched up so, we didyoung and foolish. It wasnt until our daughter Hannah was born that I realised Charlotte wasnt truly interested in familyjust shops and socialising. I thought after the divorce shed be happy for Hannah to live with me, but instead, she fought hard in court, if only to spite me.

So why is your mum so fond of Charlotte? Emily asked.

Because she was the perfect option for the familyfamiliar, safe, and good for business. Dont worry, Mum just needs time to see how wonderful you are.

But things only got worse after the wedding. Evelyn no longer tried to hide her disapproval, criticising Emily for her housekeeping, her cooking, and even her appearance.

Dont you understand? Evelyn would sigh, scanning Emily from head to toe. You dont look quite right standing next to my son. Couldnt you get your hair done? Wear a bit more makeup? Dress a bit better? Where does your salary even go?

Luckily, William heard this and immediately put his foot down.

Mum! If I ever hear you speak about my wife like that again, well stop coming over! Enough! If you keep this up, Ill speak to Dad about it. Emily is the loveliest woman, and I love her!

From then on, Evelyn held her tongue, but only to double down on singing Charlottes praises. Charlotte herself, once uninterested in contacting William, suddenly became keen to stay in touch.

You barely see Hannah anymore, she cooed over the phone. Why dont we all do something together this weekend?

You never let me see her at all! William replied, exasperated. Ill gladly take Hannah for a weekendon my own!

ButI am her mother, Charlotte protested. How could I just let her go?

Shed be with her father.

But you have a NEW wife now. Charlottes tone dripped with sarcasm.

Unlike you, Emily is caring and kind, and I trust her completely with Hannah. William hung up and looked at Emily with a worried sigh.

Id love to meet your daughter, Emily assured him with a gentle smile.

A few days later, Emily opened the front door to find a little girl with wild ginger curls and blue eyes so like Williams. The girl hid shyly behind her father.

Come inside for some tea! Emily suggested, instantly feeling an affection for Hannah that matched what she felt for William.

In the beginning, Hannah was nervous and reserved, uncertain of Emilys place in her world. Emily worked hard to win her trust, and before long, Hannah laughed and played as all children do.

Charlotte, meanwhile, started bringing Hannah over more and more often, with the excuse that she missed her father. Emily and William adored taking care of her, and she clearly grew to love them in return.

You know, Emily, Hannah confided one afternoon when William was out, Mum never talks to me.

Hows that? Emily asked, surprised.

When I go home, she tells me to stay in my room and not to bother her. She never plays with me or takes me anywhere. Can I live here, with you? Hannah hugged Emily tight, tears pricking her own eyes.

Id love that, Hannah, Emily whispered, holding back her own tears, Butits not up to me, love. Your mum might not agree.

Why not? She doesnt want me anyway! Hannah cried out in despair.

Dont say that. Im sure she loves youshes just busy.

Busy? She doesnt work! Shes always at the shops with her friends. She never takes me along! Emily! Please let me live with you!

Ill speak to your dad. I promise, darlinghell think of something.

I have thought about it, William admitted that night. But Charlottes stubbornshe doesnt want Hannah, but she wont let me have her either, just to make things difficult for us. Still, I promise youwell find a way.

Days passed, but Charlotte still refused to give up custody, though she continued to leave Hannah with William and Emily for longer and longer stretches.

When Emily found out she was pregnant, their happiness was overwhelminguntil Charlotte arrived, as usual, with Hannah in tow. But this time, the girl wouldnt look at anyone and stubbornly refused to stay.

Youve replaced your own daughter by deciding to have another child! Charlotte sneered, striding out of Emily and Williams home.

Hannah, darling, whats happened? Why are you angry with us? Emily knelt beside her.

You dont want me anymore! Now youll have your own real child! Hannah burst into tears and pulled away.

Emily and William wrapped her in countless hugs, assuring her that, no matter what, she would always be their beloved daughter. Hannah warmed a little, but from then on, she grew more distant, and though Emily tried not to show it, her heart ached.

When baby Daniel was born, Charlottetrue to formannounced she was taking a holiday and left Hannah with William and Emily.

Typical! William fumed. She knows youre up to your neck with the baby and I have work! Whos going to look after Hannah?

Not my problem, darling, Charlotte sang. You wanted your daughter, after allso why have another?

Unbelievable but shed already hung up on him.

Dont worry, love, Emily soothed her husband. Maybe its for the bestHannah can help me with the baby.

To Emilys surprise, Hannah took to little Daniel with adoration, helping Emily peg out nappies, rock the pram, and keep her company during quiet evenings. By the time Charlotte returned from her travels, Emily wept to see Hannah leave again.

Then Christmas approached. Evelyn Taylor invited the family to spend the holiday at her home. Evelyns insistence unsettled Emily, but William assured her all would be well.

Mum wont ruin the holiday with Dad there. Besides, you can put your feet up and let them take care of things for oncea change from looking after everyone else.

Emily respected Mr. Taylor, Williams fathera stern but fair man with a secret soft spot and a quick wit beneath his seriousness.

Yet Evelyn still found ways to upset Emilythis time, by inviting Charlotte. Against Emilys exhaustion and plain clothes, Charlotte sparkled in a perfect dress and flawless makeup, endlessly praised by Mrs. Taylor.

Grandma barely glanced at baby Daniel. Only William, Mr. Taylor, and even Hannah herself stepped in to help Emily, who finally sat down for a proper meal only after Daniel fell asleep.

When the men went off to another room to talk, Evelyn launched into rhapsodies about Charlotte, recounting her childhood and all her supposed virtues, her voice heavy with bittersweet nostalgia.

Evelyns loud laughter soon woke Daniel, who started to cry, and Evelyn immediately berated Emily.

Emily! Your babys always fussing. Cant you settle him for once? Charlotte never had trouble with Hannah.

Emily, in tears, fled to soothe Daniel, Evelyns disapproval ringing in her ears.

Youre a terrible grandmother! Hannah said loudly, and a sudden silence fell over the room.

What did you say? Evelyn demanded, wide-eyed.

I said youre awful! And you too, Mum! All you do is gossip and go shopping together. And you cant do anything on your ownGranddad pays for everything you buy! EmilyEmily would be a better mum to me than you ever were! Hannahs voice broke as she burst into tears and swept past the stunned men in the doorway.

Inside, Emily was fastening Daniels coat, determined to leave immediately. Suddenly, small arms hugged her.

Emily, can I go with you?

My dear, who would allow it? Emily murmured, holding Hannah close, tears springing to her eyes.

No one will stop you, a gentle voice said from the doorwayit was Mr. Taylor. Hannah, if you want to stay with Emily, you have my blessing.

Thank you, Dad! said William, appearing behind him, a soft smile on his face. I think we should all go.

Soon, William was steering the sled down snowy Oxford lanes, with Emily, Hannah, and little Daniel bundled together, laughing and playing.

In the end, they all learned that family is not just about blood or tradition, but about love, kindness, and standing by one anothereven when it means going against expectations. In choosing laughter and acceptance over judgement and old grudges, Emily, William, and their children discovered the real heart of home.
