One morning, Annas husband left for work as usual but never returned. In the hours that followed, she called everywhere she could think of. In the end, it became clear that he was simply worn down by family life and had decided to leave.
Anna first met her husband, James, at a mutual friends wedding in London. They were instantly smitten and spent the entire reception talking and laughing together. Their romance blossomed swiftly, and within a few months, they were married and moved into a small flat. Not long after, Anna discovered she was expecting. She never did manage to get a proper scan; there was always somethingan illness, her boss wouldnt let her leave work, or another unexpected hurdle.
Pregnancy proved particularly challenging for Anna. She tired easily, felt perpetually nauseous, and suffered from persistent back pain. With her bump growing day by day, Anna found it difficult to walk much and spent much of her time resting. In her final month before giving birth, she didnt leave the house at all. Though James loved Anna and tried to look after her, most of his time was absorbed by his job.
Labour began unexpectedly, weeks before her due date. The doctors didn’t leave her side. The arrivals came one after the othertwo girls and a boy. Anna was in shock. When James entered the hospital room, he could hardly believe it. In a single moment, he had become the father of three.
While Anna remained in the hospital, James hurried to buy cots for the babies. Their one-bedroom flat was already cramped, and there was nowhere else for them to go. Then reality set in: sleepless nights, illnesses, and endless chores. James had dreamed life would return to how it had beencarefree, romantic evenings and long, midnight conversations. But none of that was possible now.
Overwhelmed, Anna struggled to keep up with her children, leaving her with little time or energy for James. Eventually, he buckled. One morning, he left for work and never came back.
Anna frantically rang hospitals, the police, and friends, but her efforts were fruitless. It became clear that James couldnt face the responsibility and had run out on his family.
It was then that Anna realised she had to summon her inner strength. She was responsible for her children, after all. Her own mother moved in to help, and together, they raised the little ones, though it was far from easy. Anna stayed home with the children until they turned two. They survived on child benefits and her mothers pension.
When a new shopping centre opened nearby, Anna applied for a job. Though she had three children, her reliability shone through and she was hired. Life began to get easier. In time, Anna was able to afford a nanny, which took a load off her mother’s shoulders. A few years later, Anna received a promotion. She transformedconfident, stylish, and self-assured. Thats just how James found her when he happened to return to town to visit his parents.
James asked to see the children and, looking contrite, pleaded with Anna to forgive him for the way he had left. He wanted another chance. Anna looked at James and realised one thing: she no longer felt anything for him. Her heart had moved on long ago, and she said as much. As he left, Anna breathed a sigh of relief. At last, shed made her peace with the past. Her future, she knew, was hers to shapeand she had learned that no matter what life throws at you, you are stronger than you think.
