You know, my mother-in-law has this really irritating habit. Ever since my husband and I got married, she just turns up at our place unannounced. At first, I wasnt exactly thrilled about it, but nowespecially since our little girl turned oneI honestly cant stand it any longer. See, weve worked hard to get her into a proper routine, and shes tucked up in bed by 9 oclock every night. Every parenting book, and even our GP, says having a set bedtime is great for kids, and it means my husband and I can enjoy a bit of time for ourselves in the evenings.
But does my mother-in-law care? Not a bit! She pops round just as Im getting our daughter ready for bed, and as you can imagine, starts playing with her and gets her all hyper.
She always excuses herself by saying she lost track of time at work. Shell play silly games with her granddaughter, make her giggle, and then I spend hours settling my daughter, who just refuses to sleep.
It happened again last nightour daughter managed to drift off at twenty to nine. Then, twenty minutes later, theres my mother-in-law, barging in and immediately waking the baby up. Thats when a little lightbulb went off in my head.
I pretended my phone was ringing and, after a bit of act, told her that a friend of mine was having some sort of emergency and needed help, so would she mind watching the baby while my husband and I popped out for a bit?
She said yes, so I grabbed my husband and we practically legged it out the door.
Whats going on? he asked, a bit confused as we got in the car.
Dont worry! I said, grinning. Were off to the cinema, going to have a bit of a night off while your mum looks after our little one! After a second, he cottoned on, burst out laughing, and off we went.
We got home just after midnight. Our daughter was finally asleep in her cot, but the place looked like a hurricane had hit it! Toys everywhere, a bottle on the floor, nappies scattered all over. My mother-in-law was slumped in the chair, her brand new jumper soaking wetIm guessing with milk. Honestly, I think she realised what a nightmare it is trying to get a toddler to sleep when theyre all wound up.
After that, she never showed up so late again. And if she happened to call round in the evening, shed just quietly peek at her granddaughter while she slept, not daring to wake her.
