I Just Don’t Get Parents Who Boast: “Today My Son (or Daughter) Had School Friends Over—So I Invited…

I honestly dont understand parents who brag, Today, my daughters school friends came over. I called all six (or seven, or even ten) of them into the kitchen and served them dinner. Some even asked for seconds. We really dont mind, let them eat.

Really? And you feed all of those children? I have another question for these parents: Dont you feel its a waste of money, time, and effort to feed children you barely know? They have their own parents, who should be looking after them.

There was a time I found myself in this exact situation. When my son was in Year 3, he once brought home five friends (thankfully not the whole class). They were playing in his room while I was in the kitchen, preparing dinnermashed potatoes and sausages.

My son came into the kitchen and asked, Mum, is dinner nearly ready? Im hungry.

Of course, I replied. Go wash your hands and get ready to eat. Then, in a quiet voice, he added, The lads are hungry too. Should they wash their hands as well? No, they dont need to, I told him. Theyll be eating at home.

Just as I said this, his friends came into the kitchen. My son told them, Ill just have my dinner. Wait for me, yeah?

One of them said, Actually, Id quite like sausages and mash as well. I smiled politely and said, That sounds lovely. But you ought to head home now. Im sure your mums have got something nice waiting for you there. Go on, boys, your tea will be ready at home.

The boys turned around and left. I explained everything to my son, and he understood. After all, its not my job to feed children I barely know. They arent even my sons close friends, just schoolmates. Why on earth should I feed a crowd of children in my own home?
