Even Among Close Friends, Max Was Seen as Irresponsible and Unreliable, Too Reckless to Be Trusted W…

Even among our tight-knit group of mates, Max always seemed a bit of a loose cannonnever truly serious or responsible, certainly not someone you’d trust with anything important without worrying about the consequences. We used to joke in the pub that he needed to get all the mad antics out of his system before settling down. But out of nowhere, Max was the first one among us to tie the knot.

His wife, Alice, was an absolute gemalways doting on Max, doing everything she could for him. There were stretches when he didnt bother working, but she never made a fuss. She carried the household on her salary and pampered him in ways I reckoned a bloke ought to pamper his missusromantic dinners, posh dates, weekends away in nearby towns like Bath or Oxford. When Max did eventually go back to work, he still didnt splash out on Alice; she looked after herself. Instead, he found himself a young lass, Olivia, who became the focus of his spending.

Being Maxs best mate, I knew about Olivia, but made it clear I didnt approve of cheating.

Its not really cheating, we just spend time together. Shes like a daughter or a sister to me, Max insisted at first.

He used to bang on about how Olivia wasnt his lover and even mentioned her at nearly every get-together. Then, all of a sudden, he stopped talking about her. One evening, during beers, someone asked how Olivia was, and whether hed broken it off. Max replied with a sly grin, Happiness loves silence.

I suspected things between them had become more serious. I just didnt realise how bad until Alice saw them together. She always worked flat out at the end of each quarter and got home late. Max took full advantage, meeting up with Olivia or bringing her round. They strolled through neighbourhoods Max knew well, places hed walked with Alice, and one of the neighbours recognised him. She went straight to Alice and spilled the beansher husband was seen walking a girl home.

Alice played her cards close to her chest, asked for an early finish at work, and didnt say a word to Max. She was planning to catch them at home, but bumped into them in the local Tesco instead.

Max told me hed never seen Alice so furious. She poured a whole bottle of milk over him, chucked eggs at Olivia, and stormed out, telling them to pay for the mess. When Max finally got back to their flat, he found his suitcases waiting for him at the door. Alice refused to listen to his explanations, and didnt calm down even after a week, no matter how many times he knocked. So now, Max is holed up in a hostel, hoping the court will force Alice to split their flat so he can get enough cash for his own place.

He hasn’t learned a thing. Losing Alice doesnt bother him one bit. What really amuses him is how she caught him and kicked up a fuss in Tesco.

She won’t be able to show her face there again, Max laughs, almost boasting. Let her try; everyone remembers her.

Watching it all play out made me realise the importance of honesty and respect in relationships. Trust can be shattered in a moment, and sometimes people dont recognise the value of what they have until its gone.
