David Discovered a Mobile Phone in the Hospital Park—He Was Taking It to the Reception When the Owner Called

David hovered near the hospital entrance, shivering from the damp English air and the swirling autumn breeze. Hed dashed out for a cigarette break, only in his scrubs, forgetting his jumper behind in the staff room a mistake he now fully regretted. He was about to return inside when a sudden, insistent ringing broke the silence, a strange and persistent sound that seemed to come from thin air somewhere to his right. No one was there. It was a phone. David hadnt noticed it before; it lay, almost camouflaged, against the brickwork.

He had no time to answer. The screen was locked anyway, making it impossible to ring back. Slipping it into his pocket, he decided hed hand it to the reception desk theyd know whose it was. But as he neared his ward, the phone started ringing again, slicing through the hospital hum. The contact flashed up: Sophie.

Hello? said David, adopting a friendly tone. Ive found this phone just outside the hospital. Do you happen to know whose it is? There was a brief, excited hush before a lively womans voice replied, Oh, brilliant! Thank you ever so much for finding it! My granddad was wandering nearby and mustve left it down. Are you still there? Could we meet by the pink building, where the trauma unit is?

So, off David went.

Tell me which room your grandfathers in, he suggested, and Ill bring it straight to him. Really? Sophie sounded absolutely delighted. Thank you, thank you! Room twenty-eight second floor. Dont worry, I know the way, David reassured her.

Before returning to his rounds, David popped into granddads room, clutching the phone. The old man had been nodding off, not expecting any visitors; he didnt recognise David as one of his doctors at first, but he brightened visibly when he saw the phone.

Oh, what a relief you found it! the gentleman exclaimed. My granddaughter saved for ages to buy me that, and I seem to lose everything these days.

David ended up lingering the old man was eager to chat, regaling him with tales about Sophies childhood, asking about Davids life, whether being a doctor was as hard as hed heard, and how long hed been practising. To escape, David finally promised hed call back in the evening. The old fox seemed to have been counting on that. When David returned later, Sophie was by her grandfathers side, peeling apples in quiet concentration.

Their first conversation drifted gently from the sickroom to the staff canteen, drawn by the lure of excellent berry tea sweetened with two sugars. They spoke about odd dreams, forgotten childhood places, the way London fog draped itself over the city like a tired blanket, and the secret pleasures of eating toast at midnight.

Sophie was striking, with a gentle smile. David found it difficult to look away. She smiled back perhaps shed noticed.

I honestly cant thank you enough for finding the phone, she said. If not for you, I wouldnt have been able to get hold of Granddad. Can I buy you supper when your shift ends?

David laughed in surprise, feeling his face flush a little. No one had ever asked him out before.

Why not? he answered, heart skipping just a bit. Lets.meet in the cafeteria at eight. Ill bring the tea this time.

It became the first of many evenings they spent together, finding a warm corner in the citys tired heart, swapping stories and laughter as autumn deepened outside. Sophies grandfather declared himself the luckiest old man alivehis memory sharper now, he insisted, because it was filled with hope for Sophies tomorrows. Every time David passed the hospital doors after a shift, he looked twice at the patch of bricks where the phone had lain, amused at the twist of fate.

Soon, David no longer forgot his jumper on cold nights; Sophie would drape it over his shoulders herself, with a wink, before they disappeared into the swirling London fog, two silhouettes walking side by sideproof that chance, and kindness, could still change everything.
