So, not long ago, Daniel and I finally bought a flat. We took out a mortgage, and honestly, ever since then, it feels like weve had a constant parade of visitors.
Daniel keeps joking that maybe we shouldve kept it all hush-hush. It wasnt me who told anyone thoughit was my mum who went and broadcasted it to the entire family. A few hours later, the doorbell rings again. This time its my sister Rachel, standing there with a suitcase in one hand and her little boy on her hip.
She marches in and tells me I need to get little Alfie into nursery straight away, and help her find a job. Says theyll only be staying for two yearsjust two! I was totally gobsmacked. She hadnt even rung me beforehand. Apparently, she figured Id say no, so she just showed up with no warning, acting like it was her golden ticket to a new life.
She starts going on about meeting a husband and getting a job. I tried to explain this wasnt fair at allwe literally dont have room for her and Alfie. But Rachel just brushed it off, acting like she was the one doing me a favour. Next thing, shes rifling through the fridge, helping herself to ham and slicing up some cucumbers like she owns the place.
I tried to say again, politely, that this just isnt going to work, but Rachel had already made up her mind. She decided shed be sleeping on our sofa, and that wed be buying a cot for Alfie. I was pulling my hair out at this point. Then she starts spouting nonsense, threatening to tell Daniel that Ive been unfaithful. She actually went and called Daniel over, making up all sorts of stories to try and turn us against each other.
She even asked Daniel to marry her! He just watched the whole scene unfold with this baffled look on his face. Thenbless himhe took Rachel and Alfie by the hand, picked up their suitcase, and calmly showed them out.
She stood out by the front door for ages, two hours at least, shouting her head off. The next morning, I had my mum on the phone and she was absolutely lividtold me she was furious with what Id done, and said I wasnt family anymore.
Its funny, isnt it? We finally get our own place, and suddenly we start seeing everyones true colours. But honestly, its probably for the best. Now its just Daniel and me, and lifes been so much more peaceful and happy. Those bold sorts have walked out of our lives on their own, and good riddance, really.
