A young widow living on her own once gave three apparent criminals a bed for the night. By the next morning, the whole village was in shock over what had happened in her cottage…
After her husband died, Imogen lived alone in an old, draughty cottage on the edge of a small English village. By day she kept the house in order; by night she locked the door early and stayed put. Everyone knew she was on her own, so the neighbours would occasionally drop off a casserole or stack some firewood by her front step.
One late night, Imogen was woken by a knock so loud that she shot straight up in bed. It was pitch black outside. Creeping to the window, she eased the curtain aside… and went cold.
Three men were standing there. All big, all dressed in dark clothing, all with tattoos running down their arms. One of them was holding a large black holdall that looked extremely dodgy.
She didn’t dare open the door for ages.
“Please, don’t be afraid,” one of the men called out. “We only need somewhere to kip until morning. We’ve been round every house in this village. Everyone turned us away. You’re our last chance.”
She knew full well it was risky. But they looked exhausted, they weren’t shouting, and they weren’t trying to push their way in. After a long inner debate, Imogen opened the door.
“No funny business,” she said quietly. “You can sleep here, and first thing in the morning, you’re off.”
“You have our word,” the man replied.
Imogen put soup, potatoes, bread and a pot of tea on the table. The strangers ate quietly, said thank you after every mouthful, and behaved with such perfect manners that she wondered whether they’d been brought up in a vicarage. When they had finished, they announced that they would sleep in the sitting room and not disturb her.
Even so, Imogen didn’t sleep a wink. Every creak of the floorboards made her jump. She lay there waiting for them to start ransacking the place or something worse. But from the sitting room there was almost no sound at all.
The next morning, though, the village was in for a shock. The story of what had happened in the lonely widow’s house was about to get very interesting.
When Imogen finally came out of her room, the men were gone. At first she thought they’d pinched something. Then she spotted a thick wad of fifty-pound notes on the table, with a little note on top.
The note read: “Thank you for trusting people when everyone else slammed the door in our faces.”
Imogen could hardly believe her eyes. There was more money there than she would have earned in many years.
Within a few hours, the whole village knew. People crowded round her cottage to see the fortune the strangers had left. More than a few felt a bit guilty about having shown them the door without a second thought.
Only after a few days did the truth emerge. One of the three men was, in fact, a well-known billionaire. Together with his security team, he had been hiding from a very dangerous man who was trying to find him.
To avoid being recognised, they had deliberately dressed in ordinary clothes, avoided posh cars, and done their best to look like common criminals.
The billionaire never forgot Imogen’s kindness. He came back to the village some time later, met the widow in person, had her old cottage completely renovated, paid off all her debts, and left her with so much money that she never again had to worry about making it to the end of the month.
And the villagers talked about that night for a long time afterwards, saying that sometimes the people who look most frightening are the only ones who know how to be genuinely grateful.
