When My Mother-in-Law Invited Us to Move In and Let Out Our Flat, I Had No Choice but to Accept—But …

My mother-in-law suggested we move in with her and rent out our own flat. We really didnt have much of a choice, so in the end, we agreed. Whenever my husband was at home, everyone treated me kindly, but as soon as he left, everything would turn on its head. Id be put sharply in my place, and I wasnt even allowed to go near the fridge.
I tried explaining to my husband time and again, often ending up in tears. He never believed me. He insisted that his mother and sister would never act that way. He looked particularly dubious when I told him theyd been covering my hairbrush with some sticky substance. Im not sure how much longer I could have lasted if it hadnt been for one defining moment.
Normally, we would leave together in the morning him heading off to work, me dropping the kids at nursery. But that morning, James wasnt feeling well and decided to stay home. I popped out for a few groceries, and when I came back, I bumped right into Adam, Claires boyfriend, in the hallway.
“Oi, go fetch me a beer!” he barked at me.
“Are you joking?” I replied, completely taken aback.
“What, cant you understand? I said now! Shall I say it again?”
My mother-in-law came out of the kitchen then and snapped, “Thats right! Let her make herself useful for once, the lazy thing! And she can take out the rubbish while shes at it!”
Just then, the door to our bedroom flew open and James stepped out. The whole house went silent in an instant. My mother-in-law retreated quickly into the kitchen, while my husband walked right up to Adam, grabbed him by the collar, and tossed him down the stairs, shouting that he was never to set foot in the house again.
Claire tried to say something, but just shrugged her shoulders. My mother-in-law started to wind up for a row, but James cut her off before she got a word out. He immediately rang up the tenants and told them this would be their last month in our flat. Then he turned to his mum and sister and said, quite clearly: If either of you say even one more insulting word to my wife before the end of the month, you can forget you even have a son.
A month later, we moved back into our own place. But that ordeal haunted me for a good while afterwards. My mother-in-law and father-in-law have disowned James since, but he says he couldnt care less. He told me he never wants to see or speak to them again.
