Brother’s Birthday Invitation Sparks Drama with His Wife

Brothers Birthday Invitation Sparks Drama with His Wife

My brother Oliver got married six years ago. Since then, neither me nor our parents have set foot in their place. Every holiday, birthday, or family gathering always happens at our parents housea big place just outside Manchester. Mum cooks up a feast, sets the table, and still sends Oliver and his wife, Emily, home with packed containers full of homemade meatballs and salads.

When Oliver got married, Emilys birthday was just a few months later. Mum, all excited, decided to surprise her: we bought a cake, picked out a nice gift, and planned to pop round. Mum called Emily to give her a heads-up, but she answered coldly, saying she wasnt planning to celebrate. Mum, stubborn as ever, insisted, “Well just stop by for a cuppa and cake! You dont have to lift a finger, love!”

We went anyway. But instead of a warm welcome, we got a shock: Emily stepped outside, mumbling that the house “was a mess,” and refused to let us in. Stunned, we handed over the cake and gift right there on the doorstep and left. Since then, every family dos been at Mums, and weve all tried to forget that awkward moment.

Once, Emily said straight to our parents faces, “Youve got a big housetheres room for everyone! We live in a one-bed flatwhere are we supposed to host people?”

I could barely keep my temper. Is a one-bed really too small to have your in-laws and sister-in-law over? Its not a crowdits just three people! But we bit our tongues to keep the peace.

Now, Emilys five months pregnant. Itll be our parents first grandchild, and Mum, of course, wont stop fussing. Shes always calling Oliver to check if Emilys okay, if she needs anything. But we recently found out Emily quit her job early in the pregnancy. Mum panicked: “Is she unwell? Does she need my help?”

Oliver reassured herEmilys fine, just decided to “take it easy.” We were confused. Oliver and Emily have always lived beyond their means: fancy dinners out, holidays, designer clothes. They dont even have a mortgagethe flat was left to her by her nanso theyve blown their cash on luxuries. But without her salary, moneys tight, and their lavish lifestyles at risk. Oliver tried explaining they needed to cut back, but she wont budge on her comforts.

Emily admitted to Oliver she quit her job because she was scared of “catching something at work.” Fair enough, but now their budgets stretched, and she still expects the same spending. And in the middle of all this, Olivers invited us all to celebrate his birthday at their place! Mum and Dad were stunned. Dad even joked, “Finally, Ill find out if my daughter-in-law can cook!”

Mum was thrilled, looking forward to a proper family night. I called Emily to sort the details, but instead of a calm chat, I got hysterical sobbing. Emily, in tears, said she didnt want us there: “Ill have to clean, cook! Im pregnantits too much!”

I tried to calm her: “Emily, it doesnt have to be fancy. Boil some potatoes, toss a salad, stick a chicken in the ovendone. Well bring the cake. Its just dinner for five. Whats the issue?”

I even suggested getting a takeaway to make it easier, but she kept whining about mopping floors and tidying. I lost my patience: “Emily, its a one-bed! How hard is it to clean? Do you only hoover when guests come over?”

In the end, I gave her an ultimatum: “If you dont want us there, we wont come. Well ring Oliver to wish him happy birthday, and thats it.”

I told Mum, and she agreed. When Oliver found out, he blew up: “Emily doesnt workshes at home all day! Cant she manage one dinner and a quick tidy? Youre coming, end of! We cant afford takeaways or a cleaner, so shell have to cope!”

His words hung in the air like a storm cloud. We were all left fuming. The excitement for the birthday vanished. The thought of Emilys sulking face, muttering and rolling her eyes, killed any enthusiasm. No one wants to feel unwelcome in their own brother and sons home.

But at the same time, it hurts knowing we might upset Oliver. Hes so looking forward to having everyone roundits all he wants for his birthday! How can we just not show? Its his day, and hes not the one being difficult. Were torn: swallow our pride and go, risking a tense evening, or say no and break his heart. Theres no easy way out, and every move just makes things worse. What do you do when love for your brother clashes with dislike for his wife? We dont have the answer, but the birthdays coming up, and a decisions got to be made.
