I Told Mom I Was Studying, But I Was Working to Pay for Her Chemotherapy Treatments

**Diary Entry**
I told Mum I was studying, but in truth, I was working to pay for her chemotherapy sessions. Every morning, Id wake at five to make it to my first job. As I got ready in silence, Id hear her coughing in the next rooma sound that shattered my heart and grew weaker with each passing day.
*Off already, love?* shed ask from her bed when I peeked in to say goodbye.
*Yes, Mum. Early lectures at university,* Id lie, forcing a smile. *The scholarship covers everything, remember? Dont worry about a thing.*
Her eyes lit up whenever I mentioned my *studies.* It was the only thing that brought her peace amid the pain.
*Im so proud of you, Emily. My daughter, a doctor one day,* shed whisper, and Id swallow back tears.
The truth? Id never set foot in a university lecture hall. That *scholarship* was pure fiction. I worked six in the morning till two in the afternoon at a café, then cleaned office blocks from four till eleven at nightall to cover the chemo costs the NHS couldnt fully pay for.
One Tuesday morning, while serving coffee at the hospital where Mum was treated, Dr. Harrison approached me.
*Emily? Youre Mrs. Margarets daughter, yes?*
My blood ran cold. *Yes, Doctor. Is everything alright? Has something happened to Mum?*
*Shes stable, dont worry,* he said gently. *But I need to speak with you. Have a moment?*
My legs trembled. *Is it about the payments? I promise Ill catch up this week*
*Its not that,* he interrupted softly. *Your mother mentioned youre studying medicine on a full scholarship.*
The world seemed to tilt. *I Doctor, I can explain*
*Emily, Ive worked here fifteen years. I know every medical student in London,* he said, eyes kind. *And Ive seen you rushing between jobs for months.*
Tears spilled down my cheeks. *Please, dont tell Mum. Its the only thing keeping her going. If she finds out I dropped out for her, shell*
*I wont say a word,* he assured me. *But I want to help. Ive contacts at Kings College. We can make that lie a reality.*
I couldnt believe it. *Doctor, I cant afford*
*Tuitions covered. Fees too. Just be at the medical faculty tomorrow at eight. Ive spoken to the deanan old friend.*
I collapsed into sobs.
*Why are you doing this?* I managed.
*Because Ive seen how you care for your mother. Because you work eighteen-hour days without complaint. And because someone like you deserves a second chance.* He squeezed my shoulder. *Besides, the world needs more doctors with your heart.*
That night, I came home brimming with hope. Mum was awake, waiting as always.
*How was uni today, love?*
For the first time in months, my smile was real. *Brilliant, Mum. New classes tomorrow. Its going to be an amazing year.*
*You look different, Emily. Lighter, somehow.*
*Because I finally believe everything will be alright.*
As I tucked her in, it hit me: sometimes the most painful lies bloom into the most beautiful truths. And sometimes, angels wear white coats and appear right when you need them.
