No Right to WeaknessNo Right to Weakness

You know, my friend Emily got this text from her pal Charlotte the other day that just said please come I’m in the hospital. She didn’t even stop to change out of her comfy stuff at home just yanked on her jacket over that soft jumper she had on barely noticing how it rode up a bit as she moved. Didn’t even think about glancing in the mirror her mind was totally on that short message from Charlotte that had come in half an hour earlier.

She was proper worried when she read it. Froze for a second trying to work out what could have gone wrong but then she shook her head hard right now being there mattered more than guessing. Grabbed her keys and phone from the bedside table and almost ran for the door pulling on her boots as she went.

The trip to the hospital felt like it dragged on forever in her head. The usual route seemed endless traffic lights going red like they were doing it on purpose buses crawling along and people on the street acting like they didn’t see how rushed she was. Emily kept peeking at her phone screen as if waiting for another message but it stayed quiet. Questions kept spinning in her head what happened how bad is it why the hospital but no answers and that silence just made the worry worse.

Emily walked slowly up to the right ward and carefully pushed the door open a crack. Her eyes went straight to Charlotte lying on the narrow hospital bed. She was staring at the ceiling with a blank look like she was trying to find answers up there. Normally her hair was neatly done in a nice style but now it was all tangled spread across the pillow like the last time it had been brushed was a couple of days ago.

Looking closer Emily noticed other worrying things her friend’s face looked unusually pale dark shadows under her eyes and on her cheeks you could still see dried tear marks. All of it together made a picture of deep inner shock that made Emily’s heart sink.

She quietly went over to the bed and carefully sat on the edge trying not to make noise. Her voice dropped to a whisper all on its own like loud sounds could hurt Charlotte what happened.

Charlotte slowly turned her head. Her eyes were dry but they had such a deep almost touchable sadness in them that Emily felt a wave of worry rise up inside. She suddenly realised how fragile her friend looked right then.

He left Charlotte whispered so softly you could hardly hear and her fingers clutched the edge of the sheet tight. Her knuckles went white from the tension like she was holding on to something real in this world that had come crashing down. Just packed his things and said he couldn’t do it anymore.

Who Andrew Emily couldn’t help herself and grabbed her friend’s hand without thinking. It was almost automatic she felt like this might bring Charlotte back from that dark place her own thoughts had dragged her to.

Charlotte nodded without saying a word. At that moment one single tear finally broke through and slowly rolled down her cheek leaving a damp trail on her pale skin. She didn’t try to wipe it away like she had no strength left for even that.

Emily swallowed feeling a lump in her throat. She was trying so hard to find words that might ease her friend’s pain a bit but her mind was blank. She just couldn’t believe that the bloke who had wanted kids so badly could come out with something like that.

Charlotte went quiet and in the silence of the ward you could hear the wall clock ticking softly. Her shoulders shook more and more and her fingers were locked together tight like she was trying to hold on to something you can’t really grab. Then she slowly raised her hands and covered her face like she was hiding from the whole world. That simple move showed such huge tiredness that Emily felt a pang in her chest.

A few minutes passed maybe more time goes funny in moments like these. Gradually the shaking got weaker her breathing evened out. Charlotte pulled back a bit wiped her tears with the back of her hand and looked at Emily the pain was still there in her eyes but now there was a bitter clarity too like she’d finally accepted something unavoidable.

And the reason Emily asked quietly almost whispering. She picked her words carefully afraid of reopening the wound. But to help you need to understand what happened. He should have explained his decision at least a bit right.

Charlotte gave a crooked little smile and there was no fun in it at all just bitterness and confusion.

The kids she said and her voice trembled. He says he’s tired of the sleepless nights the constant noise having to look after someone all the time. Can you imagine Emily He was the one who kept pushing for us to keep trying. He kept saying we’ll manage this is our happiness we have to fight.

She paused like she was going over those words again words that once sounded like a promise but now felt like a cruel joke.

We went to all the doctors had tests done went through the procedures I went through so much so much pain and heartache so many tears.

Her voice cracked but she pulled herself together took a deep breath and went on.

And I thought that since we’d been through all that together we’d definitely stay together no matter what. But I guess I was wrong.

She looked out the window where the evening shadows were thickening and added almost without a sound.

Twelve years. Eight attempts. And all that for nothing.

Their story started just like in a romantic film easy bright love at first sight. Charlotte and Andrew met at a mate’s party in London. That evening the flat was noisy music playing people chatting laughing and talking over each other. Andrew was standing by the window with a glass of juice lazily watching the guests when Charlotte came fluttering into the room. She was telling her friend something excitedly waving her hands around and when she noticed she was being listened to she burst out laughing. It was then that he noticed the sprinkling of freckles on her nose and how her gaze warmed when she smiled.

He went over to say hello. The conversation started easily like they’d known each other for years. They chatted about everything under the sun favourite films travels strange habits. Time flew by without them noticing and when the party was coming to an end Andrew realised he didn’t want to say goodbye. He suggested going for a walk and they wandered through the night streets of London until dawn talking about dreams and plans.

After three months they were already living together. The flat soon filled up with shared things his books on her shelves her makeup on his bedside table two pairs of shoes by the door. It all came together somehow by itself naturally and right. After six months they got married. The wedding was modest just close friends and family lots of laughter toasts and dancing till they were ready to drop.

On their first anniversary they were sitting on the balcony of their flat drinking tea with cakes and remembering how it all started. Andrew suddenly looked at Charlotte seriously took her by the hand and said I want children with you. Lots of children. A whole football team.

Charlotte laughed put her arms round his neck and pressed her cheek to his shoulder.

Of course there will be she promised. We’ll have a big noisy family.

In that moment everything seemed so simple and clear love shared life children. They believed it was only a question of time.

The first two years they didn’t hurry. Both were building their careers Charlotte worked as a designer in a studio Andrew was moving up in a tech company. They travelled a lot summers by the seaside winters in the mountains weekends to nearby towns. Enjoyed being with each other learned to live together created their own little world.

Then they decided it was time. Time to start a family.

And that’s when the difficulties began. At first it didn’t look too bad. They went to the doctor and he said calmly don’t worry this is normal lots of couples find that getting pregnant doesn’t happen right away just keep trying.

They tried month after month. But nothing happened. Then the doctor suggested checking hormones. Tests examinations more tests. New consultations new prescriptions.

Perhaps treatment will be needed the doctor said after another appointment.

Charlotte tried to stay optimistic. She looked up information kept an eye on her health. Andrew supported her went to the appointments followed all the recommendations tried to keep her spirits up.

But fate had other ideas. The first failure at six weeks. Charlotte found out about the pregnancy barely had time to get excited and a few days later she ended up in hospital. She remembered it all down to the smallest details the cold ultrasound room the doctor’s indifferent look as he stated the fact and Andrew’s hand squeezing her palm so hard that bruises were left on the skin.

A year later the story repeated. The second time again at an early stage. The pain was just as sharp as the first time only now mixed with a feeling of unfairness. Why were they so unlucky What had they done wrong.

They kept on fighting. Had new tests went through examinations tried different treatment methods. Every month Charlotte waited with her heart in her mouth for the test results and then seeing the negative answer silently put the packet away in the drawer. Andrew saw her disappointment but didn’t know how to help. He was just there held her hand made tea listened when she wanted to talk and stayed quiet when she closed herself off.

Time went by and still no answers appeared. But they didn’t give up because they believed sooner or later it would all work out.

The doctor pronounced the diagnosis infertility calmly almost matter of factly but for Charlotte and Andrew those words hit like a punch. They sat in the office listened to the explanations nodded tried to ask questions but inside everything seemed to have stopped. Charlotte squeezed Andrew’s hand so tightly that her nails went into his skin and he didn’t even wince. They looked at each other and saw the same thing in each other’s eyes what now.

But they weren’t planning to give up. After long discussions consultations and thinking it over they decided to try IVF. The first attempt. The second. The third. Each time waiting hope nervously staring at tests visits to the clinic ultrasounds and each time disappointment.

Then there was another failure. This time Charlotte held it together better on the outside but Andrew could see she was changing she laughed less stared longer at kids playing in the park went quiet more often in the evenings. He tried to cheer her up joked hugged her said they’d manage but he understood her strength was running out.

IVF again. Waiting again. Pain again. The cycle repeated exhausting them physically and emotionally. Charlotte kept a diary wrote down all the readings watched how she felt. Andrew went with her to all the appointments held her hand during the procedures brought tea when she was tired. They tried to keep a normal rhythm of life worked met friends even went on short trips but thoughts always came back to the same thing.

One evening Charlotte stayed in the bathroom for a long time. Andrew knocked opened the door a crack she was sitting on the edge of the bath holding a test in her hand. Her look was empty like she was looking somewhere through the walls.

I can’t do this anymore she said quietly not turning round. I’m tired physically mentally I’m just tired.

Andrew went over sat next to her put his arm round her shoulders. He didn’t start saying big words didn’t try to convince her that everything would be fine. He just held her close feeling her shoulders shake.

We’re nearly there he whispered after a minute. One more try. The last one. Please.

Charlotte closed her eyes took a deep breath. She knew it would be hard. She knew that ahead there’d be more months of waiting tests procedures. But she saw how Andrew was looking at her with hope with love with belief. And she agreed. Because she loved him. Because she believed that their happiness was somewhere there just round the next corner.

Getting ready for the eighth attempt went as usual tests examinations strict schedules. Charlotte tried not to think too far ahead not to dream not to picture it. She just did everything the doctors told her and tried not to think about the past.

The procedure. The waiting. The first tests. And a miracle a positive result.

At the ultrasound she held Andrew’s hand so tightly that he winced a little but he didn’t pull away. The doctor moved the probe over her tummy commented on something and then smiled look. Two heartbeats.

Charlotte couldn’t believe it. She stared at the screen saw two little pulsing lights and felt nothing but overwhelming joy.

It’s a miracle she whispered not taking her eyes off the screen. A real miracle.

Andrew stayed quiet. Then he ran a hand over his face and Charlotte saw that his eyes were full of tears. He was crying just as sincerely as on the day of their wedding when they promised each other to be together in joy and in sorrow. Now it was a joy they’d earned through struggle that they’d deserved that they’d waited so long for.

And then.

Everything changed on one of those completely ordinary evenings. Nothing suggested a storm was coming the day had gone calmly the kids had eaten played then they’d been washed and changed into pyjamas. Charlotte was just putting the little ones to bed one in the cot the other in her arms softly humming a lullaby. The house smelled of milk and baby cream in the corner a soft night light projector was glowing drawing a starry sky on the walls.

Andrew came home later than usual. She wasn’t surprised lately he’d often been staying late at work. She heard him come in take off his shoes go to the bathroom to wash his hands. Then there was silence. Charlotte thought that as usual he’d look into the nursery kiss the kids ask how the day had been. But he just stood in the doorway watching.

She felt his gaze on her back turned round. Andrew looked tired more than usual. Dark circles under his eyes shoulders drooping arms hanging limply at his sides. Charlotte smiled at him wanted to say something but he spoke first. Quietly almost in a whisper.

I’m leaving.

Charlotte froze. The little boy she was holding in her arms stirred but she didn’t even rock him like time had stopped.

What she asked again hoping she’d heard wrong. Her voice came out unusually high like it wasn’t her own. Please say that again.

I’m tired he repeated not moving from the spot. Of the sleepless nights the constant noise that there’s no time for myself anymore. I can’t go on like this.

Charlotte slowly put the little boy down in the cot trying not to wake him then turned fully to her husband. It didn’t compute in her head how could he say that They’d worked so hard for this. The kids that was their happiness.

But we went through all this together her voice shook but she tried to speak steadily. You were the one who insisted said you wouldn’t back down remember how happy we were when we found out we were having twins How we chose names bought the cots.

Andrew looked down like he couldn’t bear her gaze.

I thought I could cope. I really thought so. But it’s too hard I can’t anymore.

She took a step towards her husband like trying to find even a hint of doubt in his face a sign that he’d change his mind.

You’re just going to leave us she finally whispered and her voice came out very quiet almost lifeless. Me and them.

Andrew took a deep breath ran a hand over his face like trying to collect his thoughts.

I need some time he answered looking away. I don’t know if I’ll be able to come back.

He said it without anger without shouting just stated the fact and that made it even scarier. Charlotte stood in front of him feeling everything inside grow cold. She wanted to ask what about us wanted to shout you can’t do this to us but the words got stuck in her throat. Instead she just looked at him trying to understand when it all went wrong when he stopped being the person she’d shared her dreams and hopes with.

And behind her two little people were sleeping peacefully who still didn’t understand that their world had just cracked down the middle.

He left. The door clicked quietly and the flat became especially quiet like the whole world had turned the sound down at once. Charlotte stood in the middle of the room still not believing what had happened. She slowly turned round like hoping it was just a bad dream and Andrew would now appear from the kitchen with a cup of tea like he had hundreds of times before. But the hallway was empty.

She took a few steps to the window mechanically adjusted the curtain then went back to the cots. The kids were asleep both breathing peacefully occasionally moving their little hands. Their small faces were so peaceful like they knew everything would be okay. Charlotte leaned down touched their little palms warm soft. Making sure the babies were sleeping soundly she quietly moved away.

The flat was clean and cosy everything in its place just how she liked it. On the table stood a half finished cup of cold tea on the sofa lay an open magazine with tips for young mums. It all looked so ordinary like nothing had happened. But now it was a different flat a flat without Andrew.

Charlotte slowly lowered herself to the floor next to the cots. Her legs suddenly felt so heavy like she’d walked dozens of kilometres without stopping. She pulled her little girl close the one who was sleeping nearer and felt the warmth of her little body. This touch usually calmed her gave her strength but now everything inside was trembling.

For the first time in many years she felt completely alone. Not just tired or busy with things truly alone. Before even in the hardest moments when the kids didn’t sleep at night when she didn’t have time to make dinner or forgot to phone her mum she knew Andrew was there. He might not say nice words might just silently bring a cup of tea or pick up a crying child but he was here. And now he wasn’t.

The silence was broken only by the steady breathing of the babies. They slept not suspecting that their world had just changed. Charlotte looked at them and tried to get her thoughts together. What should she do next How to live.

Tears came without her noticing. First one then a second and then they poured like a stream quietly without sobs just rolling down her cheeks and falling onto her little girl’s pyjamas. Charlotte didn’t try to stop them. She just sat on the floor holding the child close and cried for the first time in many years allowing herself this weakness.

Outside the window it slowly got dark. Evening flowed gently into night and Charlotte still sat on the floor afraid to move afraid to disturb this fragile moment of silence in which there was only her and her children.

Charlotte was sitting by the window in the hospital ward hugging her knees with her arms. Outside the glass snowflakes were slowly swirling falling on the grey pavement. She looked at them but saw not a winter scene but a chain of events long years of struggle hopes small joys and big disappointments. In her head Andrew’s last words kept sounding over and over and each time they hurt just as sharply as in the first moment.

I just don’t get it she continued quietly not taking her eyes off the window. How can someone just up and refuse them Us After everything we went through together.

Her voice shook but she didn’t start crying the tears seemed to have dried up. Only questions left with no answers.

Emily who was sitting next to her on a chair silently stood up went to her friend and hugged her pulling her close. She had no words. She’d known Andrew as a caring husband and loving dad but it turned out it wasn’t that simple after all. This bloke just up and left leaving his wife and kids on their own.

Charlotte buried her face in her friend’s shoulder and her shoulders shook slightly.

I don’t know how I’m going to cope she whispered. But I have to. For them.

There was no grandstanding or heroism in those words just quiet stubborn resolve. She understood ahead were sleepless nights thousands of little cares tiredness that you couldn’t share. But there in the cot at home with her mum lay two little people who needed her more than anything in the world.

Emily squeezed her hand tighter. She didn’t know what to say either. What words could ease this pain But in her silence there was a firm confidence her friend wouldn’t be left alone. They’d cope together step by step day by day.

A couple of days after this conversation Andrew’s mum came into the ward without knocking. In her hands she had a bag of fruit a plain gesture of care that looked almost like a joke against her expressionless face. She stopped at the door looked round the ward then turned her gaze to Charlotte.

Well she began not rushing to come closer I see you’ve made yourself at home here.

Her tone wasn’t angry but there was a detachment in it like she was speaking not to her daughter in law but to someone she hardly knew. Charlotte looked up but didn’t say anything. She waited to see what would happen next.

Andrew’s mum went to the table put the bag down but didn’t sit. She stood with her arms crossed over her chest looking at Charlotte as if assessing her state.

You do realise that this was inevitable she continued finally breaking the silence. Andrew’s always been someone who needs his personal space. And here two kids constant noise sleepless nights he just couldn’t take it.

Charlotte took a deep breath. She wanted to argue remind her how Andrew himself had insisted on having children how happy he was with every bit of news about the pregnancy how they chose names. But she stayed quiet. Words were useless now in front of her was a woman who had already decided everything for herself.

Charlotte slowly sat up a bit on the bed propping herself on her elbow. The movement came out clumsy she still felt really weak and even such simple actions took a lot of effort. But the inner tension made her pull herself together. A cold wave was rising in her chest cold and heavy like a lead plate. She looked at Andrew’s mum waiting for her to say something that would explain everything put the dots on the i’s.

You need to understand the woman went on still not sitting down Andrew doesn’t want to bring up children. But he’s ready to help with money.

Charlotte felt her fingers clench by themselves gripping the edge of the sheet. She tried to take in what she’d heard but her thoughts were all jumbled.

What do you mean by that she asked trying to speak evenly. Her voice shook a little but she got a grip on herself straight away.

Andrew’s mum turned her head slightly towards the window as if it was hard for her to look Charlotte in the eye.

He’s leaving his half of the flat she continued carefully choosing her words. But this will be counted as child support payments. For a long time. He has no intention of coming back but he doesn’t want you to go without.

A heavy silence hung in the ward. Somewhere in the corridor you could hear the muffled voices of nurses outside a car drove past but for Charlotte it all seemed to have switched off. There was only the steady voice of the woman she was talking to and her own thoughts beating in her head like birds in a cage.

She gripped the edge of the sheet so hard that her knuckles went white.

So he wants to buy us off she said and in her voice there was not anger but rather bitter confusion.

Margaret lifted her chin a bit and her tone became harder.

Don’t be so sharp. He’s doing everything he can. He’s going through a difficult time at the moment. But he’s not refusing responsibility. It’s just he’s not ready to be a father in the full sense of the word.

She said it as if she was explaining something obvious as if this arrangement was the only possible and reasonable one. Charlotte looked at her and tried to understand did they both Andrew and his mum really think that a flat instead of fatherhood was a fair swap That money could replace being there support love.

Do you really think that’s the way out she asked quietly not taking her eyes off her. That you can just up and leave leaving the keys to the flat instead of yourself.

The woman shrugged slightly as if the question didn’t require deep thought.

It’s better than nothing. Andrew’s not leaving you to fend for yourselves. He’s just not worked out his own strength. Not ready for fatherhood. It happens you know. That’s life I’d advise you to get used to it.

And I’m ready Charlotte asked looking straight ahead. After everything we went through After twelve years of fighting.

These words seemed to hang in the air filling the ward with the weight of unspoken memories countless visits to doctors tests hopes and disappointments long nights by the newborn cots. It all suddenly seemed incredibly distant and at the same time painfully close.

That’s your choice Margaret cut in with a firm even voice. But I have to warn you don’t go ringing him making scenes putting obstacles in the divorce. Otherwise.

She fell silent but the pause stretched out hung in the air with a heavy clear threat. Charlotte felt everything inside tighten but with an effort of will forced herself to look the woman in the eye.

Otherwise what she asked trying to keep her voice from shaking.

The woman lifted her chin a little as if weighing how seriously Charlotte was taking her words.

Otherwise you could lose this help too. And even she paused choosing her words even the children. Andrew has good lawyers. He doesn’t want problems but if you cause trouble.

The last words came out cold and clear like a hammer strike. Charlotte felt like the ground was giving way under her feet. How could this be Now they were even threatening her. What cheek.

I’m just passing on his position Andrew’s mum added softening her tone a bit but there was still not a drop of sympathy in her eyes. She went to the bedside table put the bag of fruit she was holding and adjusted it as if it was important. Think about it. This is the best he can offer.

After these words she turned the door clicked quietly and she went out.

Charlotte was left alone with her thoughts. The smell of expensive perfume that Andrew’s mum had brought with her still lingered in the air but gradually faded leaving behind only a feeling of icy emptiness.

Charlotte was alone in the ward. She slowly moved her gaze from the bag of fruit to the window. Outside the glass evening was slowly falling the sky turned from blue to lilac then to dark blue. Shadows lengthened lay on the pavement in fancy patterns and in this quiet fading of the day Charlotte suddenly realised clearly her life had split into before and after.

She looked out the window for a long time not noticing how it was getting dark outside. Thoughts swirled in her head one after another but she couldn’t get a hold on any of them. Then she took a deep breath reached for the bedside table took out her phone and dialled Emily’s number. Her fingers shook a little but the movements were precise like she was afraid of losing her composure if she stopped even for a second.

Emily she said and her voice came out even almost without feeling come over. I need to talk to someone.

Emily arrived quickly she must have dropped everything right away. When she came into the ward Charlotte was already sitting on the edge of the bed. Back straight shoulders back eyes dry. She wasn’t trying to put on a brave face she just took the posture that helped her keep going.

Emily silently came over sat next to her gently touched her hand. Charlotte turned her head a bit looked straight ahead and started talking calmly without getting emotional like she was listing facts she’d thought through a long time ago.

You know what I’ve realised I won’t let them frighten me. I’ve been through too much to back down now. Yes he can leave the flat. Yes he can pay child support. But he won’t take the children away. I’ll manage. I’ll be strong. For them.

There was no challenge or anger in her voice only cold clear determination. She was no longer trying to understand Andrew’s or his mum’s motives wasn’t looking for excuses wasn’t torturing herself with questions of why and what for. All that was in the past in the life that was now called before.

Emily didn’t say any big words didn’t try to comfort her. She just nodded squeezed her hand a bit tighter and said quietly.

Of course you’ll manage. And I’ll be here. We’ll get through it together.

Charlotte finally looked at her friend. There were no more tears in her eyes only firm confidence. She knew there were many difficulties ahead sleepless nights tiredness having to sort everything out herself. But back home with her mum her two little ones were waiting the ones she’d fought for all those years. They were her support her motivation her happiness.

And now she knew for sure nothing and no one would take that happiness from her. No matter what trials were waiting ahead she was ready to meet them head on. Because she was a mum. And that meant she was stronger than any threats any words any circumstances. You know, my friend Emily got this text from her pal Charlotte the other day that just said please come I’m in the hospital.
