I Left Work and Came Home Earlier Than Usual—What I Heard on the Stairwell Changed Everything

Long ago, I left the office well before my usual time, meandering through the shadowy hallways of my building, when a piercing scream echoed, warping the evening air.

It was three winters earlier that I made up my mind to marry. My wifes profession often carried her off to faraway towns, leaving our moments together brief and precious. Even with her frequent journeys, our affection remained steadfast, untouched by arguments or strife.

Both my mother and my wifes mother were convinced that the task of raising our child would be too much for me. Their certainty in my lack of skill never wavered, though I quietly disagreed. My mother rarely visited, preferring to telephone and offer her pearls of wisdom, while my mother-in-law became a constant presence in our household.

Her endless interference wore on meshe would rearrange the crockery, inspect the pantry, and examine every cupboard. I endured it in silence. When my daughter, Charlotte, turned two, I decided to return to work. My mother-in-law eagerly volunteered to care for her granddaughter, making the arrangement seem easy for everyone.

But Charlottes brightness dimmed. Once lively and full of laughter, she became quiet, withdrawn, and unusually obedient.

My mother-in-law claimed Charlotte missed her mother. I devoted every free moment to my daughter, yet her unease persisted. Our weekends together felt empty, the sparkle in her eyes gone.

One odd afternoon, Charlotte confided that her grandmother reminded her of Harrieta loud, perpetually cross character from an old English cartoon. That was when I realised my mother-in-laws voice was always raised, her tone forever sharp with my child.

I decided to watch before saying anything. Leaving work early, I wandered home. As I entered, a storm of shouting crashed through the flat. I burst in and demanded my mother-in-law leave. She pursed her lips and accused me of being ungrateful, but I stood firmno one would be allowed to harm my child, not in this waking memory.
