Sophie finds herself expecting a baby at just seventeen.
When she heads over to her boyfriends house to share the news, his mother answers the door and coldly tells her that Jamie has left for university, and that he has asked not to be disturbed any longerhes started a new life. Sophie is left completely lost, unsure of what to do next; if her father were to find out, shes certain he could never forgive her. Stashing away her savings and packing her belongings, she moves to London and rents a small flat, bracing herself for motherhood. Her pregnancy goes smoothly, and right on time, she gives birth to a healthy, gorgeous little girl.
Tragically, Sophie suffers a severe haemorrhage after the birth and passes away. With no father in the picture, her baby daughter is taken to a local childrens home.
A few years go by before an inspiring, warm-hearted woman named Emily joins the staff at the childrens home. She is immediately taken with the sweet little girl. Returning home each evening, she pleads with her husband, Daniel, to consider adoption. Emily quickly becomes deeply attached, finding it impossible to imagine her life without the child. At first, Daniel is hesitant, worrying about the possibility of hereditary illnesses.
Not long after they bring the girl home, Emily begins to notice how much her new daughter resembles Danielher husband.
The mystery becomes clear when they invite Daniels parents round for tea. At the sight of the little girl, Daniels mother breaks into tears, and the girl quietly asks, Gran, are you here too?
Daniels mother finally confesses to having lied to Sophie all those years ago. She admits she regretted turning Sophie away and that, since Sophies passing, shes often visited her granddaughter at the home, too ashamed to tell her son the truth. She had always feared Daniel could never forgive her. In time, Sophies own parents reach out, having never met their granddaughter because they blamed her for their daughters death; now, growing older, they finally begin to see the error of their ways.
