“You Can’t Force Me to Babysit—And I Shouldn’t Miss My Night Out With Friends Because of My Grandson…

You cant force me to look after your child, and I shouldnt have to miss a night out with my friends because of my grandson. You decided to have him, so its your responsibilityyou need to rely on yourself.

She was in a lousy mood over something else, I think, so she came across a bit grumpy. It makes sense, reallyshes not only retired but still works part-time, so she wants time for herself, not to be tied down by others. But my wife took what my mum said to heart.

Your mum never helps us with Robert. Its always my parents rushing across London to pick him up or watch him. It just feels unfair

But how am I supposed to make my mum help out? She seems to have forgotten that, when I was young, shed often leave me with Grandma because she was working. My dad wasnt aroundhe was pretty much out of the picture, always more interested in the pub than usso mums got a bit of a thing against men, but that shouldnt have anything to do with her grandson. Ive never done anything wrong by herin fact, everything I do, I consider her. Itd just be nice if she could watch Robert now and then. Hes easygoing and calm, happy to play by himself. You really just need to keep an eye on him and make sure he eats. Still, my mum doesnt even want to give it a go.

How do I get her to help? And is there a way I could try without getting another earfulI stopped asking for a while. Instead, I made a pact with myself: Id invite her over for coffee, let her get to know Robert in his own space, no requests, no pressure. It went slowly. The first visit, she stayed ten minutes, barely smiled at him. The second time, he shyly showed her his books, and she snorted, Not much of a reader, are you? But the third time, he brought her a biscuit, plopped it in her lap. She ate it. He grinned.

One rainy afternoon, Mum texted meunexpected, a bit abrupt: Whats Robert up to? I invited her to join us for board games. She grumbled, but showed up anyway.

And something happened. Robert taught her how to play, and she let him boss her around. I was watching her, and she was watching himreally watching, the way you look at someone youre trying to understand. At one point, she laughed, full and honest; Robert beamed. After the game, she asked, Can I take him to the park tomorrow? Just us?

That evening, my wife noticed. Your mum seems different lately.

I shrugged, but inside, a warmth unfurled. Sometimes you cant force someone to care, but if you let them walk in at their own pace, doors open. And maybe, after all these years, my mum needed to find her own reasonsto remember the smell of rain and biscuits, the weight of a small hand in hers, and maybe even, just maybe, a part of herself shed forgotten.

So, we stopped expecting, and started hoping. And one afternoon, when Mum showed upcoat draped awkwardly, smile shyI realized something: love, when it finally comes, is worth the wait.

Här är frun ensam, och du vet vem det är. Det betyder att du ska smyga tyst in och undvika att ses för mycket av mig.
