Oops! That Didn’t Go as Planned

A Mistake Unfolds

The taxi pulled up near the entrance of the club, its neon lights flickering against the dark night. Emily stepped out, thanking the driver before shutting the door. She wore fitted jeans and a cropped tank top that flattered her figure. Unlike some of her friends, she preferred trainers over high heelseven tonight, despite her best mate Lucy begging her to dress up.

Inside, the bass thumped loudly, a stark contrast to the quiet street outside.

“Hey, you made it!” Lucy rushed over, wrapping Emily in a tight hug. “Ready for some fun and presents?” she teased, grinning as she swayed to the music.

Lucy thrived in crowds, always the life of the partysomething Emily could never relate to. She felt out of place among flashing lights and strangers whose faces were barely visible in the dim lighting. Shed have much preferred a cosy night in or a quiet café, but friendship sometimes meant showing up where youd rather not be.

“Come on, Ill introduce you to some great lads!” Lucy grabbed Emilys wrist, dragging her toward the bar where two tall blokes stood laughing. The dark-haired one turned, his deep voice smooth as he spoke.

“Hey there. Im William. This is my brother, James.”

Emilys pulse quickened. His gaze held hers, and for a moment, the noise around them faded.

“Pleasure to meet you. Youre like a ray of sunshine in this dim place,” William said with a smile. Emily laughed, cheeks warming.

“Thanks for the compliment! I have a feeling well get along.”

“Oh, no doubt about that. Just waitWilliams going to sweep you off your feet,” James joked before downing his drink.

The night flew bymusic, laughter, dancing, clinking glasses. William proved a perfect gentleman, walking Emily all the way home. They chatted effortlessly, as if theyd known each other for years.

“Its late. Thanks for a lovely evening,” Emily said, an awkward silence settling between them.

“I really enjoyed meeting you. Youre amazingtruly. Can I call you tomorrow?” William asked, rubbing the back of his neck.

“Id love that.” She kissed his cheek lightly before slipping inside.

Her parents were already asleep, unused to her late returns. Tiptoeing to her room, she crawled under the covers but couldnt stop thinking about Williamhis smile, his voice.

Morning came, and she found herself smiling without reason, a fluttery warmth in her chest.

“Im in love,” she whispered, laughing at herself.

The day passed in a blur of errands before meeting Lucy at their favourite café.

“I saw how he looked at you! Wedding bells soon, eh?” Lucy winked.

“Maybe. I think… I think Ive really fallen for him,” Emily admitted, dropping her gaze.

“Think? Youre head over heels, love!” Lucy cackled.

Lucy breezed through relationships like changing outfits, while Emily had always been more cautious. Opposites, yet their friendship never wavered.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesdayno call came. Emily checked her phone obsessively, each unanswered hope chipping at her confidence.

“Did he forget? Change his mind? Meet someone else?” The questions gnawed at her.

After her last lecture, she rushed outsideonly to freeze at the sight of William leaning against his car, flowers in hand. Relief, anger, then joy tangled inside her.

“Forgive meeverything went mad last minute!” he blurted.

His mates car had broken down in the middle of nowhere, and William had rushed to help, his phone dying before he could text.

“So simple, and here I was imagining every worst-case scenario!” Emily laughed.

“Let me make it up to you. Dinner tonight?”

The evening was perfectsoft music, delicious food, easy conversation. Over the next two months, they were inseparable. William adored her laugh; she loved the safety of his arms. They went to films, whispering over shared jokes, and wandered quiet streets long after midnight.

Then came the call from James.

“Em, I need your help with something… important. Im going to propose to Lucy. You know her besthelp me pick the ring?”

“Of course! Well done, you!”

They met at the jewellers, settling on an elegant piece with delicate stones and a heart-shaped diamond. A bouquet of red roses and a teddy bear holding a “Love” heart completed the setup. James was a nervous wreck.

“Just look her in the eyes and ask. Shell say yes,” Emily reassured him, kissing his cheek before they left.

But William never showed up that evening. Late that night, a text came through.

*Goodbye. The shows over. Dont call me.*

She read it again and again, tears blurring the screen. Calls went unanswered. Lucy knew nothing. James was away. The worst part? She was four weeks pregnant.

Days passed in a haze, nausea and heartache twisting together.

Thenhospital lights. Lucy at her bedside.

A knock. William entered, roses in hand, followed by a bruised James carrying fruit.

“Im an idiot. A jealous fool. When I saw you kiss James, I lost it,” William choked out.

“We sorted it, though not without a scrap,” James added, sheepish.

“No more stress, love. Ill be right herefor you, for our baby. I promise.” William pressed his forehead to hers.

…Love isnt always smooth sailing. Without trust, happiness crumbles. Jealousy plants doubt, distorting even the clearest truths. Hold your loved ones closeand never let fear write your story for you.
