Some peoples audacity truly knows no bounds. Take my aunt, for example she recently pushed things so far that I decided to cut all ties with her, and honestly, I have no regrets. Let me recount the whole affair.
I inherited a cosy holiday cottage from my parents. Its a decent spot: weve got electricity and running water, the railway station is nearby, the roads are cleared in winter, and you can drive there anytime. Over the years, most of the cottages in the area were sold off. Companies didnt want to keep running holiday resorts anymore.
On the site of the old cottage, my wife and I built a new, two-storey house. Of course, we had to take out a mortgage, and none of my relatives offered any help. At one point I asked my aunt if shed want to pitch in I proposed splitting the land, the house, and the costs evenly. She flat out refused.
Gradually, we managed to finish the build. My wifes business started to take off, and we sorted all the finishing touches and landscaping without borrowing any more money. My in-laws kept well out of the project.
Last year, we moved into the new house and now live there all year round. Ive got four children. We gave each one a bedroom and built a massive kitchen. The place looked stunning, like something out of a home magazine. Then my aunt reappeared. First, she started phoning me and then this year, she suddenly turned up uninvited, inspecting the house and garden for ages before declaring,
Youve done a marvellous job here! Ill be coming every summer with my children and grandchildren. Theres plenty of space. Your girls could share rooms youre spoiling them by giving them each their own.
I replied, Drop by for a day or two if you like, but not for longer. I need some rest myself I cant spend the whole summer entertaining your lot. And how I raise my kids is up to my wife and me.
We had a proper row in the end. I threw her out and told her just how little shed ever helped me, and now here she was, suddenly claiming rights over my home. We havent spoken since and I dont regret it one bit.
If this whole ordeal taught me anything, its that you have to set boundaries otherwise, people will walk all over you without a second thought.
