You wont believe whats happened. My friend didnt give me a penny for my wedding, and now shes invited me to hers.
So, last year Alice and Robert finally tied the knot. Both sets of parents wanted to throw this huge wedding bash because Alice and Robert are their only children, and lets be honest, the mums had been dreaming of all the traditionsthe white dress and the horse-drawn carriage and all that. Alice and Rob thought maybe they could just get their mates together for a barbecue after the ceremony, but their parents wouldnt have any of it. The mums, especially, wanted the real-deal fairy tale.
So, Alice and Rob realised there was no escaping the whole show. They dived into the preparationsgetting their nails done, sorting out hair and makeup, picking out the dress and suit, plus all those little details. The parents took care of just about everything except Alices wedding dress and Robs suit. They even booked the fanciest restaurant in town! Alices mum chose a lovely bouquet, and the cake was handled by one of Robs mums friends whos basically a legend when it comes to baking.
When it came to the guest list, the parents were determined to invite absolutely everyone, even distant relatives they hadnt spoken to in ages. They justified it by saying those relatives are well-off and might give really generous gifts, which could help the newlyweds buy a car or save for a house. After a lot of back and forth, they decided to skip the super distant ones. A few relatives bowed out for understandable reasons, so in the end, most of the guests were actually Alice and Robs pals, just as theyd hoped.
On the big day, the weather turned out perfect, even though rain was forecast for the morning. Alice looked gorgeous in a stunning silk dress with delicate lace details. She was absolutely radiant, and Rob honestly couldnt take his eyes off her. The whole day was a real celebrationeveryone was happy, the photographer was buzzing around trying to get every shot imaginable, and by the time they got to the restaurant, the guests were ready for a proper feast.
After the photo session, the couple hopped into a sleek white carriage and headed to the restaurant. Champagne flowed, congratulations were endless, and everyone handed over their presentsmostly cards stuffed with money. Alice and Rob had told their guests ahead of time that theyd prefer cash, but a few older folks stuck to tradition and gifted things like blankets, bedding sets, and some crockery.
The wedding cake was spectaculara three-tier masterpiece decked with fondant lace, creamy flowers, and little pearly bits. Even the fussiest guests were impressed. It was an elegant do, and only as the sun came up did the guests start peeling away to head home, while Alice and Rob settled into the hotel suite booked for them.
The next day, when they went to see Alices mum, she said there was an empty envelope among the giftsjust a blank card, no cash. And it turned out the envelope was from Alices close friend, Sophie. Figuring out who gave it wasnt hard since all the other envelopes had names on them, but this one didnt. When Alice heard, she was gutted.
It was even worse because, before the wedding, Sophie had gone on and on about how no one gives less than a thousand pounds these days, and she even said shed make sure to support Alice with a generous gift.
Fast-forward less than a yearSophies getting married herself and shes invited Alice and Rob. Straight away, Sophie mentioned that she’d really appreciate a cash gift because she and her fiancé hoped the money from guests would cover most of the wedding costs. So, Alice and Rob are wondering what on earth to do! Alice joked that maybe Rob should hand Sophie an empty envelope, just like shed done. Rob thought maybe they should give her even more so she’d be embarrassed. And Alices mum suggested just putting the smallest amount in the cardafter all, Alice never called Sophie out on her trick, so really, theres no reason to get revenge now.
With Sophies wedding coming up, Alice still cant decide what to do about the gift.
