Theres no doubt in my mind that any parent would lay down their own life to protect their child. A mother or father will always rush to safeguard their son or daughter when danger arises. But for a stranger to put their own safety on the line for someone elses child I simply cant find words strong enough to express what I felt when the whole tale was shared with me.
Ever since William was born, an older lady had been working for us. We hired her through an agency, as her experience was vast and shed cared for many children over the years. We just needed someone trustworthy, who could manage looking after a young childsince I honestly wasnt much good at it myself. At first, she helped me around the house, and eventually, we started leaving William in her care during the day. I had my work and so did my husband, and only at the end of the day did we have the time to spend with our son and with each other.
When William was two, on a bright spring morning, the nanny took him for a walk in the park. It was still earlymany were hurrying off to the officeand they all witnessed a man nearby strolling with his dog, neither on a lead nor muzzled. The owner refused to restrain the animal, insisting it was completely harmless, but as our little one tried to wave at it, the dog took it as a threat and lunged straight at him.
If Id been there myself, I cant say how I would have reacted, but our sixty-year-old nanny moved faster than anyone could believe. She pulled William aside just in time, before anything dreadful could happen, and the dog turned on her instead. Eyewitnesses said the animal tore at her clothes while the owner stood frozen behind, too shocked to intervene. Luckily, several brave passers-by managed to drag the dog away and rang the police, while the nanny lay on the ground, shielding our son in her arms.
Thankfully, no lasting harm came to either of them. William only scratched his little hands, while the nanny suffered a few bruises, but somehow, she escaped being bitten by that massive dog altogether.
After that day, she became more than just an employee to usshe became part of our family. William lovingly calls her Gran, though they share no blood. That remarkable woman showed more courage than anyone else in the park, and this story still proves to me that every dog owner must be diligent, must keep their pet securely under control. No matter how gentle they believe their dog to be, its their duty to ensure the safety of everyone around.
