That day, Mary couldn’t understand what was happening: first her daughter told her she never wanted to see her again, and then her husband said he wanted a divorce

The night before her daughters A-levels, Mary opened her wardrobe and searched for a dressnothing seemed right. Suddenly her daughter strode into the room.

Mum, please dont be offended, but I dont want you at school tomorrow, she said firmly. Mary sat on the edge of the bed, bewildered. Lately, her husband had been treating her poorly as well. Hed often say she looked worn out, past her prime. Their daughter was close with him; he was always the one attending parent meetings. That evening, Mary resolved to speak to him about their daughter’s behaviour.

Mary and Alex had fallen in love while they were still just teenagers. They married in haste.

They couldnt afford a real wedding. Marys mother lived on a modest pension, and Alex had grown up in a large farming family. Mary put her own ambitions on hold for the sake of their familyshe left university and took a job so Alex could continue with his studies. Later, Mary voiced her longing to return to her studies, but Alex persuaded her otherwise.

Lets wait another year. I need to find a steady job first, then well focus on you, he promised. But year after year passed. Marys dreams faded beneath the weight of mortgages, work, housework, and raising a child. This became their life. Eventually, Alex built a thriving business and ran his own company.

One evening, Mary waited for him to come home and began the conversation.

Whats happening? Why do you and our daughter seem ashamed of me? she asked, her voice trembling.

Mary, its all rather obvious, isnt it? Our infatuation ended a long time ago. Were adults now, and not remotely alike. Frankly, Im embarrassed by you. We need to separate.

Her daughter left with Alex, ignoring her mothers calls, telling her not to interfere. Alex soon remarried a younger woman. Their daughter moved on with her own life, changed her hairstyle, and reinvented herself. She looked fantastic. The years slipped by, and Marys daughter eventually became a mother herself. Then, her husband left hershe had nowhere to go but back to Mary.

Mary forgave her, though the apology was a long time coming. Later, Alex appeared at Marys door once again, hopeful for a second chance, but she shut it firmlysome bridges are better left crossed only once.

Through it all, Mary learned that self-sacrifice is noble, but forgetting your own worth invites others to do the same. Sometimes, choosing yourself is the lesson that heals every hidden wound.
