Enchanted

Once upon a time, Alans life took a turn, swept up in a story tinged with mystery and passion. For years, he lived contentedly: wife, children, work, lazy family Sunday morningseverything exactly as most sensible English adults experience. Routine ruled, until Alan changed jobs, landing a promising managerial role in London. There, fate didnt greet him with luck, but rather, with troublein the captivating form of a young woman named Megan.

Neither Alan nor Megan were free. Until then, no woman but his wife had captured Alans attention, not even fleetingly. He had been steadfast, not only in word, but in genuine deedno thoughts of straying, never even a hint of disloyalty. His romantic life was complex, but any temptation was kept at bay.

Then, in a blink, everything changedthe day Megan herself broke the ice. Their first encounter was an explosion: thrilling, shocking, unforgettable. It wasnt love at first sight, but rather, an all-consuming passion after their first liaison, wild and overwhelming.

For three years, their affair continued in secret. Cautious to the extreme, they saw each other perhaps once a week: in discreet hotels, rented flats, sometimes hidden in the snug of Alans car. They covered their tracks like seasoned agents, not once slipping up. Alan sensed, though, that his wife was picking up on something, but he always managed to evade any unpleasant questions.

A double life is no easy feat; for all its appeal, it brings heartache in equal measure. Alan believed this arrangement would lastneither of them seemed willing to wreck their families. Suddenly, though, Megan ended it, leaving Alan utterly stunned.

It felt as if the ground had swallowed him whole. After an agonising conversation, Alan promised that that chapter was closed, that he would never try to reopen it. But to promise is one thing; to carry it out is another.

No matter how hard he tried, Alan couldnt forget her. Grief gnawed at him, jealousy burnedhis longing drove him to the edge; a desperate hope flickered that somehow things would rekindle. Each time he glimpsed Megan at work, his heart thudded in his chest like a lad of sixteen.

Years slipped by. The fire inside him refused to be extinguished, especially as they kept working together and seeing each other most days. Shortly after their breakup, Alans health crumbledhe grew thin, weary, suits hanging off his frame. Doctors ran tests, but nothing physical could be explained.

Finally, his wife suggested seeking help from a respected healer in a nearby county towna woman shed visited years ago, who had helped her overcome an illness. Alan never put much stock in such things, but agreed. They drove out together, waited their turn, and entered a cosy sitting room. The healer turned out not to be elderly, and she immediately sent Alans wife back to wait in the car, bidding Alan to lie down, close his eyes, and keep them shut.

He couldnt see what she did, but after a while, she spoke:
“Someones put a spell on you.”
She described, in incredible detail, the woman Alan had been meeting. His first reaction was disbelief:
“Thats impossible!”
The healer asked,
“And who is Megan? Out with it, now.”
Flustered and shaken, Alan confessed the whole affair. She listened, then said,
“She bewitched you. Wanted to keep you close, but when she lost interest, she left you ill and adrift. This magiccurse, reallyI can lift it. But you must leave your job and never seek her company again.”

Alan did precisely that. On Monday, he handed in his notice, erased Megans number, disposed of anything that reminded him of her. At first, he burned with a mix of hate and unquenched love, but eventually, the feelings dulled. He visited the healer a few more times, until she told him her work was done.

At their final meeting, she offered advice:
“Youre free, Alan. If you ever feel bound to someone again and you know whos to blame, you can sever the ties yourself. Light a church candle, close your eyes, imagine threads binding you to them, and burn them away, one by one, saying, ‘Nothing binds us now. I forgive you, and I am free.’ Say a prayer if you like. You may need to repeat this, but each time will bring you closer to peace.”

Letting Megan go was excruciating. Alan would find himself scanning the road for her car, resisting every urge to phone her. It took roughly a yearhis yearning slowly fading. His health returned, he regained his spirits, and some colour came back to his cheeks. Of course, Alan never truly forgot, and sometimes, she visited his dreams. He saw her around on occasion, but never approached. The dark pull and torment finally dissipated, and Alan, at last, recovered his peace.

It was in letting go and truly forgiving, even when it felt impossible, that Alan discovered healingthe hearts freedom does not come from holding on, but from the hard-won act of release.
