We Went to the Maternity Hospital to Bring Home Our Baby Sister, But Ended Up Returning with More Children Than Expected

My wife, Charlotte, has recently given birth to our second child. We already have a little boy whos three years old, and now shes had a daughter.
Thankfully, the birth went smoothly this time. Charlotte wasnt nearly as anxious as before, knowing more or less what to expect. When she heard our daughters first cry, she broke into the brightest smileso much so that the midwife couldnt hide her own excitement. If only every birth were like this! she exclaimed.
We were warmly congratulated on our daughters arrival, and then I was sent home, handed a list of things to bring to the hospital the next day. When I returned to see Charlotte, I was surprised to find three babies in her room. Catching the look of astonishment on my face, Charlotte chuckled quietly and explained what had happened.
The previous day, on the maternity ward, a young woman had given birth for the first timetwin girls, a bit early but both healthy. She was placed in the same room as Charlotte. For one reason or another, whether she didnt have enough milk or simply chose not to breastfeed, Charlotte had offered to nurse the twins as well. Fortunately, she had plenty of milk, so all three babies were well-fed and content.
The following day, I witnessed something that truly touched me. The twins’ mother went off to see her own mother. They talked for a long time, and the girls mother looked rather downcasteven began to cry. The doctors came by, even the head of the ward; everyone seemed worried about these newborn girls. Their mother wanted to leave them behind. No one could convince her otherwisethe young woman packed up and left the hospital that evening, without her babies.
Charlotte continued to feed the twin girls. I visited every day and couldnt help but admire my wife. I found myself daydreaming about how wonderful it would be to have a big familya son and three daughters! Then, one day, I shared my thoughts with Charlotte, only to discover shed been thinking along the same lines. Shed grown so attached to the twins that she wanted to suggest we look after them.
The head of the maternity ward went out of his way to help us, sorted out the paperwork, and made sure that Charlotte and I could officially look after the twin girls as soon as possible.
So we set off to collect a sister for our eldest son, and came home with three!
All my life, Ive wanted a happy, bustling family, and now I know for certaindreams really do come true.
