Lately, my minds been restless. The thought of moving into Freddies flat crossed my mindperhaps it would finally prompt Emily to move on. I doubted shed agree, but Freddie mentioned I could have the lease transferred to me for a bit, though it proved unnecessary. Emily simply nodded and accepted, leaving me completely taken aback.
I nearly lost my composure when I discovered the woman my son intended to marry! Freddie, my only child, whom Id raised almost single-handedly (his father forever tied up at work), had chosen a retail worker! Mum, Emilys actually a manager at a fashion shop, Freddie corrected. Shes kind, generous, and always considerate. Still, I couldnt let it rest. Shes just a shop assistant! Have you forgotten your father and grandfather were engineers, and your grandmothers and I are doctors? Were a reputable family! Youve got a degree and a promising future in dentistry.
Freddie replied, Mum, love is what counts. I disagreed. Its crucial! A wife should match her husbands standing! Look at Sophieshes brilliant, training to be a neurologist, and shes adored you since school. But I dont love her, Freddie said, ending the debate. Of course, the arguments continued. I constantly reminded him how Id worked myself ragged after his father passed, juggling two jobs, networking, and preparing him for exams.
None of it changed anything. Freddie and Emily married and moved in with me. At first, I didnt mindit made it easier to push Emily out. Think youve hit the jackpot? Id mutter to Emily when Freddie wasnt around. Lets see how long you last as a wife. Youre not suitable for my son, you know? Emily retorted, Well see, Mrs Brown. Youd be wise to calm down. We should get alongFreddie needs to focus on his career, not family squabbles.
We both tried to keep things polite for Freddies sake, but the tension was palpable. After two months, I thought Id succeeded. Emily grew quieter, stopped responding to my jabs, and seemed ready to leave. But she stayed. The night owl outlasted the early bird. Freddie and Emily secured a mortgage for a new flat and didnt mention a word to me.
I was floored. Are you out of your mind? How did you pay for it? Where is it? Youre leaving me for her? Freddie remained calm. Mum, two women sharing a kitchen is a disaster waiting to happen. The new place is closewell visit often. Turns out the shop assistant sold her grandmothers cottage in Kent. The house itself was worthless, but the land was bought by a local developer for a tidy sum in pounds. Freddie sold his old Ford and used his savings for the deposit on a two-bedroom flat.
Couldnt you have picked something more sensible? I couldnt help myself. Youll be working all hours to pay for this, Freddie. Mum, Ill manage, and Emily works too. We know what kind of earner she is! Living off you Mum, please! And I hadnt even started. The ideal daughter-in-law, Sophie, still cared for Freddie, but she wouldnt wait forever.
I did everything to separate Freddie from the shop assistant. Id call him for helpfix the tap, bring groceries, keep me company because of my blood pressure. Freddie came, did everything, sometimes accidentally bumped into Sophie at the old flat, but barely noticed her. Then he started visiting lesswork, he claimed, kept him busy. I knew better! Emily must be keeping him away! I even called an ambulance once, just to remind my son who mattered most. It worked for a whileFreddie visited more, worried about me.
Then another blowSophie left for a three-year placement overseas. I feel miserable here without Freddie, she sighed. Over there, Ill be busy and gain experience. Shame youre leaving, dear, but I cant keep you here, I sighed too. Privately, I resolved to arrange Freddies divorce from Emily before Sophie returned. Two accomplished professionals deserved a proper family.
I still spoke to Emily through gritted teeth, never missing a chance to criticise her work or chores. Eventually, Emily stopped visiting and never invited me over. Good riddance! I welcomed my son alone, always reminding him about clever Sophie.
Six years passed before I achieved my aim. Freddie never explained why he and Emily split, but I knew. Id orchestrated those accidental meetings with Sophie, back from abroad. Id convinced my son hed made a mistake, but it could be fixed. I suspected the absence of children played a role. Emily turned out to be unable to have kids. That suited medivorce is simpler without children. My son, though, was too honourable.
Mum, the flats half mine, half Emilys, but were not selling yet. Mind if I move back in with you? Of course. But the flat will need sorting eventually. I was glad to have him home. Soon Sophie would move in too, and Id celebrate such a fine couple!
Freddie and Sophie must have had a fierce argument, as my son didnt object to her moving in, and she took charge almost immediately. Fried foods unhealthy, Sophie declared. Meat should be lean, baked, and really best avoided. Potatoes are bad. Mayonnaise? Are you mad, buying that cheap sausage? See, Freddie, how Sophie cares for your health? I beamed.
But after a month, my happiness faded. The potential daughter-in-law (they werent rushing to marry) nearly put us on a diet of nothing but greens. She made us do yoga at home, threw out all the rugsdust is harmful!and generally ran the house.
I found myself reconsidering: perhaps I should move into Freddies flat for a whilemight as well nudge Emily out. They could build their own nest. Do you reckon Emily will agree? You could sign the place over to meIll give it back later. But none of that was necessary. Go ahead, Emily shrugged, astonishing me.
Emily probably had no idea her ex-mother-in-law came with schemesshe was in for a surprise. I quarrelled with Emily over everything. If I needed dinner, Emily was already cooking. If there was sand in the hallway, it was Emilys fault for not cleaning. If Emily came home late and woke me, it was a scandal. Any excuse would do. At first, Emily argued back, but soon shed retreat to her room. And she never brought men home, which Id counted on
Meanwhile, Freddie started complaining about Sophie. Mum, I cant take it! Dont eat this, dont go there, bedtime at nine. Im afraid to breathe around her! Thats Emilys fault! Sophies looking after you! I insisted. I thought Freddie was just being fussy. I wouldnt admit Sophie sometimes went too far. No matter! Building a good family takes effortthings would work out if both tried. Though I wasnt so sure anymore
I happened to notice Emily looked different Her stomach wasnt as flat, and shed always kept fit. What, got knocked up by some layabout? I couldnt help myself, eyeing Emilys belly and tired face. What layabout? Emily replied wearily. Yes, Im pregnant, but its Freddies child. What an actress! You and Freddie divorced four months ago. Trying to pin someone elses baby on him? I could, but the daughter really is his. We celebrated the divorce, if you can call it that Had a farewell rendezvous. Want a test after the birth? Does Freddie know? Yes. And I hate to disappoint you, but weve been seeing each other for a month and plan to remarry.
I wasnt disappointed. Truthfully, I was exhausted by all the domestic strife, and my beloved son hadnt been happy with Sophie. Now hes about to be a father, and I a grandmother, so its time to end the feuding. Therell be plenty of new, joyful worries. And Ill deal with Sophieone last time, Ill meddle in my sons relationships.
Reflecting on all this, Ive learned that meddling in my sons life only brought heartache. Sometimes, letting go is the greatest act of love.
