“I Understand Completely,” Adam Said Patiently — “Your Granddad’s Ill Again… It’s Not the First Time…

I understand, I really do I said with as much patience as I could muster. Your grandads ill again Adam muttered. Its not the first time, is it? Hes already been through two surgeries and now hes caught that newfangled virus, so he cant manage on his own, can he?

He keeps forgetting to take his tablets, then he feels awful and calls for an ambulance. The neighbours told me the doctors turn up every other day, I explained. Hed be better off with us. We can give him his own room, he honestly wouldnt be in the way. And we could have his flat tidied up, maybe even rent it out if need be. The extra income wouldnt hurt, would it?

Adam gave a sharp snort, clearly irritated by my suggestion that grandad move in.

Its always something with your family, isnt it? First your chronically sick mum, then youre running after your sisters kids, and now your grandad wants to live here? What is this house a halfway home? And old people smell, I dont want him here. Hes got his own place. If you want someone keeping track of his meds, put him in a home or tell your parents to take him in.

What Adam didnt know was that Id already made up my mind. Id decided grandad was coming to live with us no more debate. I just nodded to Adam, but the next day, I packed grandads things and moved him in.

Adam was absolutely livid when he saw grandad in the kitchen that evening. He flew into a rage, saying hed never set foot in our house again if anyone else moved in apart from us. And he kept his word he spent the weekend gathering his things and moved back into his parents house. He didnt care that wed been together for years or that itd be just the three of us at mine, whereas at his parents, his sister and her child lived there too.

So now its grandad and me, sharing the flat. Part of me still hopes Adam will come to his senses and return. I do love him, and I know he loves me too. Grandad keeps to himself, mostly in his room, and certainly doesnt make a fuss or smell, as Adam claimed. Truthfully, Im just hoping things will go back to normal soon.

If theres anything Ive learnt, though, its that sometimes you have to stand by your loved ones even if it means losing something you thought would last. Family deserves your loyalty, even when it makes life a bit more complicated.
