Caught Out at the CaféNow Theres No Going Back
Ive filed for divorce, Emily announced nonchalantly, exactly one week after it all unravelled.
What do you mean? John stammered, utterly taken aback. Were fine, arent we? I do everything you want
I dont love you. I cant forgive you, Emily replied, the same even tone. Even being in the same room as you feels like a prison sentence to me.
Emily hadnt intended to get married at twentyshe always thought she ought to finish her education first. But John was so persistent, so polite, so considerate. He courted her for two years with charm and endless bouquets, utterly winning over her future mother-in-law.
Dont be silly, love, her mum told her every time John fixed something around their flat or brought them both flowers. Youd be daft to let a lad like that go.
She finally married him when she realised she simply couldnt imagine her life without this seemingly ordinary but deeply thoughtful, loving man.
The next fourteen years were, if anything, remarkably happy. They bought a nice flat in Oxford, drove a decent car, and spent their holidays on the Cornish coast. They never had so much as a real argument.
Sounds dreadfully dull! Emilys best friend, Sophie, would scoff, she who was forever feuding and reconciling in dramatic style with her own husband. How do you stand it? No passion, no fireworks!
We love each other, we trust each other, and we want the same things, Emily would reply with a gentle smile. Not every love story is all shouting and slamming doors.
She and John really did seem in syncthey liked the same films, the same food, the same little seaside towns. But there was one subject they could never agree on: having a child.
Emily yearned for a baby. But she couldnt have one herself. Two painful rounds of IVF had failed, and that was the first time John ever raised his voice with her.
Emily, stop it, please! Youll end up ruining your health! We have a good life, just the two of us, like millions of other people. Why torture yourself?
I want to be a mother. Dont you want to be a father? She wept.
Not if it means risking you. I love you. I dont want to lose you.
John firmly refused to consider adoption. No, Im not raising someone elses child. You never know what youre getting. If anything, we might hire a surrogate.
But surrogacy was expensive. Their savings from Emilys job as an accountant and Johns as a machinery technician at a local factory were modest at best. And John flatly refused to sacrifice their lifestyle to chase Emilys dream.
Then, one day, her friend Rachel, a nurse at the local hospital, called her. Theres a baby boy left here, healthy as anything. His mum just walked out; not real trouble, just an airhead, really. She ran off the second day.
Here was their chance! Emily left work early, dashing home. Shed persuade John, she was sure. After all, they both wanted to be parents.
Cutting through the local park, she saw John heading towards their favourite café. Oh! Perhaps, she thought fondly, hes planning a surprise dinnera romantic treat.
It wasnt until she saw the woman beside himtall, pretty, laughingand saw John gently put his arm round her and kiss her that she understood. The couple walked in, oblivious to Emily, who followed on numbly, taking a seat at the next table.
The cafés high-backed booths had always made the place feel private, something she and John had loved. John and the woman, however, didnt notice her.
So, why did you invite me out in broad daylight? The woman giggled. Arent you worried the missus will catch you?
Emily? John scoffed. Shed never believe it. I have the perfect husband reputation! Anyway, shes at work. Dont want to talk about herlets talk about us, Lucy
Lucy snorted with laughter at something he said.
Emily didnt hear the rest. She walked out as if her feet were blocks of stone. She sat for an hour on a bench at the parks far end, stunned. What now? How do you recover from such a betrayal?
Rachels call jolted her back.
Em, are you there? Whats going on? Shall I reserve that baby or what? Hell go quick, you know.
Johns got another woman, Emily blurted.
Blimey, hes really pushed his luck! Rachel replied. Maybe its not as it seems, Em
No, I saw it myself. Just tell me what you know.
Rachel hesitated, but finally confessed. Johns been seeing someone for ages. Everyone knows but no one wants to get involvedyou two seemed perfect.
Dont get upset. All men have their momentsyou know John does care for you
Emily hung up without another word, letting the tears come at last.
After an hour, the tears stopped. Another hour and she felt almost calm. She noticed her mobile had fourteen missed calls from her husband and Rachelshed silenced the ringer.
She stood up, determined, and walked home.
Emily! Where have you been? Are you alright? John was frantic, grabbing her in a hug.
She could feel his heart poundinggenuine fear, perhaps. But she pulled away silently.
She took off her shoes, placed her handbag tidily on the table, and finally said, John, I know youre cheating. I wont ask how you couldyou did. Im divorcing you, John. Thats it.
Emily, what nonsense is this? Who told you that? Its rubbish. I love you, Id never He faltered at her stare. Let me explain
He tried, growing quieter and less confident as his lies ran dry.
I dont love you anymore. I dont believe a word you say. Thats the end of it. Emily went into their bedroom and started packing her bags.
Im sorry! Im an idiot! But I love you! Ill do anythinganything! Please forgive me!
Anything? she asked without turning.
Yes, absolutely. John nodded, desperate.
Fine. Were adopting the baby boy Rachel told me about. After that, Ill decide.
Ill do it! John barely hesitated. Anything you want!
He kept his word, even calling in favours to get the adoption process fast-tracked. He went to the adoption classes, saw the doctors, helped choose everything for little Tom.
For months he watched Emily, desperate to please, bending over backwards to be the perfect husband. But Emily knew it was all an actit was too late for believing.
Six months later, Tom was theirs in the eyes of the law.
Ive filed for divorce, Emily said softly, one week after the adoption was finalised.
What do you mean? John gasped. Were fine, arent we? Im doing everything for you
Theres nothing left. I cant forgive you. I cant bear to share a home with you.
So I was just a means to an end for you? John demanded, lost.
She shrugged, turning away. Everyones for themselves.
Unbelievable! he snapped, storming out.
He even transferred his share of the flat to Tom, convinced hed finally have the family he craved. But Emilys heart was closed to him.
That evening, John returned.
Are you really set on divorce?
Yes. You can move into my mum’s old flat for now. Ill sell it and give you some money afterwards. No apologies, John. You betrayed me. Now, my son is the only man I care for.
Alright, if thats how you want it. But let me tell you somethingTom is my son, my biological son.
Emily stared at him in disbelief.
He is. His mother was my ex, before you, a nurse. We broke up over her getting pregnantshe strung it out, hoping Id marry her, but I loved you. She threatened to leave the baby at the hospital, and then she actually did. I never dreamed youd choose to adopt himits mad! But by the time I realised, it was too late
Emily listened quietly for a moment, absorbing it all.
I understand, John, but it doesnt change anything. Please move out and answer the court papers properly.
John could hardly believe she meant it, but the divorce went through.
Now, he visits Emily and Tom on weekends, holding out hope for a second chance.
Life, Emily realised, is too short to waste living with betrayal. No matter how much others may admire your life from the outside, true happiness only comes from honestywith yourself, and with the ones you love.
