Once, During One Of Our Lessons, Our Teacher Acted Cruelly—How She Humiliated a Classmate Named Paul for Helping His Mum (the School Cleaner), Only to Be Surprised Years Later When He Became a Successful Business Owner and Gave Her a Ride Home in His Mercedes

Once, during one of our classes, our teacher acted quite cruelly.

We shared a classroom with a boy named Peter. He was just like the rest of usnothing out of the ordinary, with average marks and a passion for gaminghe genuinely loved it. Every so often, Peter would enter online competitions, occasionally winning prizes. His mum worked at our school as a cleaner, and after lessons, Peter always helped her: carrying buckets of water, washing up, and mopping the floors. At first, everyone laughed at him for this, but he paid them no mind. Eventually, people stopped mocking him and began to treat him as they would any other classmate.

Our teacher, Mrs. Collins, was well respectedbut only by those who earned high marks. The rest of us referred to her by unflattering nicknames and didnt think highly of her. She was always pleasant in conversation with me and my friends, but Peter never turned in his homework and felt uneasy in her presence.

One day, during a lesson, Mrs. Collins behaved appallingly. She told Peter he would spend his entire life mopping floors and washing dishes, just like his mother, because he was good for nothing else.

Years later, a group of us paid a visit to our old teacher, Sarah. Some former students had invited her along, though she no longer taught us. Sarah seemed a touch surprised to be there, but she hadnt changed a bit. Right away, she started poking into everyones personal lives. When she came to Peter, she asked what hed been up to and joked that he was probably still cleaning floors somewhere. Peter just shrugged and replied, I work as a caretaker.

Sarah responded, Ah, just as I expectedyouve not amounted to much.

Quietly, Peter added, Actually, I own my own company.

Sarahs face changed in an instant; she was clearly thrown off. That wasnt the only shock in store for her. When it was time for Sarah to leave the café, Peter asked his driver to take her home in his gleaming Mercedes. As she sat in the car, frowning and looking rather unsettled, it was clear she was wrestling with what had just happened.

The lesson is simple: never judge someones worth by their beginnings or by the work their family does. True success comes from character, perseverance, and believing in yourself, no matter what others might say.

Under hela min uppväxt behandlade min bror mig som en tjänsteflicka, och minnena av vad mamma och mormor sa fortsätter att hemsöka mig.
