I Never Loved My Wife and Told Her So Many Times—It Wasn’t Her Fault, Our Life Was Comfortable, but There Was No Love: How Sophie’s Surprising Response to My Honesty Changed Everything and Left Me Questioning Trust After Divorce

I never truly loved my wife, and I told her so more than once. It was never anything shed donewe lived rather comfortably.
She never made a fuss, never complained, always gentle and considerate. Yet the trouble was constant: there simply wasnt any love.
Every morning, Id wake up with a longing to leave. I’d dream about meeting a woman I could truly fall in love with. Yet, I could have never guessed how fate would upend everything.
With Alice, life was easy. She ran our flat with quiet efficiency and looked positively radiant. My mates envied me and couldnt see how Id managed to end up with a wife like her.
To be honest, I didnt know either. I was an ordinary bloke, nothing special as men go. Yet there she was, loving me How on earth was that possible?
Her unwavering affection and loyalty gave me no peace. Tormenting me further was the thought that, if I left, someone else would step inmore well-heeled, more charming, more successful.
Just imagining her with another man, Id go half mad. She was mineeven if I never loved her. The sense of possessing her was stronger than reason. But can you spend your whole life with someone you dont love? I thought I could, but I was mistaken.
Tomorrow, Ill tell her everything, I decided as I drifted off. In the morning, over breakfast, I finally steeled myself.
Alice, will you sit down for a minute? I need to talk.
Of course, love. Whats on your mind?
Imagine we split up. I move out, we live separately
Alice chuckled.
What a peculiar thought! Is this some sort of game?
Please, let me finish. I mean it.
Alright, Im listening. And then?
Honestly, do you think youd end up with someone else if I left?
James, whats this about? Why are you talking about leaving?
Because I dont love you, Alice. I never have.
You must be having me on? I dont understand.
I want to leave, but I cant. The thought of you with someone else keeps me up at night.
Alice thought for a while, then answered serenely:
I wont find anyone better than you, so you neednt worry. Go on, go. I wont be with anyone else.
Do you promise?
Of course, love. You have my word.
But where am I meant to go?
Youve nowhere to go?
No, weve always been together. Perhaps I ought to stay nearby, I said, crestfallen.
Dont fret, Alice said. After the divorce, well sell the flat and each get a smaller one.
Really? I didnt expect you to help me out like that. Why are you doing it?
Because I love you. When you love someone, you cant keep them against their will.
A few months slipped by and we divorced. Not long after, I learned Alice hadnt kept her promise. Shed found another man, and as for the flats shed inherited from her grandmother, shed never meant to share them all along. I ended up with nothing.
How could I ever trust women now? I truly havent a clue.
What do you make of Jamess actions?

I Never Loved My Wife and Told Her So Many Times—It Wasn’t Her Fault, Our Life Was Comfortable, but There Was No Love: How Sophie’s Surprising Response to My Honesty Changed Everything and Left Me Questioning Trust After Divorce
