One Ordinary Afternoon, the Doorbell Rang: Victor Rushed to Open, Expecting His Mum Visiting the Gra…

March 12th

Today started off just like any other, but then the doorbell rang. I hurried to answer, half-expecting to find my mum paying a visit to see her grandchildren. Instead, there stood an unfamiliar woman, pale and looking unwell, with a girl of about ten holding tightly to her side.

Im thirty now, and for the longest time I had no intention whatsoever of getting married. At first, I convinced myself it was because I hadnt enjoyed my freedom enough yet. Id watch my mates, all of them tied down, and realised their lives werent for me. Nagging wives, endless arguments, looking after the house, children running riotnone of them could grab a pint in peace, let alone talk about a proper fishing trip or watch the football together.

My mind was changed in a flash the day I saw her. She was walking towards me, and something about her made me stop in my tracks. I was intrigued, couldnt help but follow her at a distance, though she seemed not to notice me at first. Still, she quickly hopped onto a double-decker bus before I could catch up.

Not wanting to miss my chance, the very next day I made a point of walking the same route, hoping for another glimpse. I waited nearly a week before I finally saw her again. Heart pounding, I mustered up the courage to speak to her. Her name was Alice. From that moment we were inseparable. With Alice in my life, my outlook on marriage changed completely. I wanted to build a life with her.

Before long, we were married, and Alice proved to be the most wonderful hostess and partner. Our life ran smooth and happy. My mates used to mock me about my sudden change of heartId always sworn off marriage, but there I was, the happiest man in the world, deep into family life.

A year passed and our son was born, and then our daughter came along two years after. Those were the best days. I did everything I could for Alice, and every evening our children would greet me with laughter and hugs. My mum doted on her grandkids and was utterly thrilled Id found such a wise and loving wife.

And then today. The doorbell again. Expecting Mum, I opened the door, only to find the woman and the little girl. She looked as though she barely had the strength to speak.

Hello. You probably dont recognise me. Im Mary. Weve only met the once. But this is your daughter. I wouldnt have come under any other circumstance, but Im illI have to go into hospital. Theres no one else to care for her. Shes a sensible, calm child.

She hugged the girl, whispered to her to listen to her father, and left. I was dumbstruck, with Alice standing quietly behind me, having overheard everything. We settled the girl into the spare room, and I tried to explain to Alice. She didnt press for detailsit was clear enough what needed to be done. Alice rang my mum and asked if she could come over.

We explained to her that she had another granddaughter. The following day, I decided to have a paternity test done, just to be sure. Afterwards, my daughter and I visited Mary in hospital. The doctors were hopeful, but said her treatment would be costly. I looked at the girl, reassuring her that wed help her mum get well.

A few days later, the results arrived: the girl was indeed my daughter. My mum lit up at the prospect of another grandchild and eagerly took her in for a time, introducing her to the family.

Mary made a remarkable recovery, thankfully. I took out a loan at work to pay for her medicine. My boss was supportive. Within a month, Mary was ready to leave hospital.

Our entire family went to fetch her home. Mary wept with relief; she was so grateful that we hadnt abandoned her or her daughter in a time of need. She promised shed pay back every penny for her treatment, but I waved her off.

Theres no need for that. I never knew my daughter until now. The important thing is for you to be there for her, and Ill help in every way I can.

Alice smiled, pride written all over her face. I realised, at that moment, how rich life becomes when you open your heart. Family isnt always neat, or planned. Sometimes, the greatest gifts walk through your door in ways you never expected.
