Ive decided, all on my own, that my eldest daughter truly deserves for my husband and me to hand over the house and the cottage to her. My son, frankly, has been a slob his whole life. Hes never shown us, his parents, an ounce of respect or gratitude for all weve done. Worse still, hes more attached to his in-laws than us. He goes as far as to call his mother-in-law a sweet mum, but won’t even pick up the phone on my birthdayapparently, he forgot.

Hes muddled through somehow. He and his wife live together, there are no children, but at least they both work, thank goodness for small mercies. The upside is he doesnt come begging for money anymore; hes found he doesnt need us. Odds are, theyll inherit everything from his wifes parents, while my Emily is on her own. Apart from us, she wont have anyone to fall back on.

Emily lives solo in a rented flat because she doesnt want to be a bother, plus she enjoys a bit of independence. I absolutely cant wait to give her the house, so she can finally feel like a proper lady of her own place. Shes a lovely girlworks as a childrens therapist, always thoughtful towards us, her parents. We spend all the holidays together; she drops by for weekends, sometimes I visit her. And despite her modest way of life, she was the only one to dash over and give us all her savings when my husband slipped down the stairs and broke his hip. Its painfully clear which children actually appreciate their parents.

So, in my eyes, its only fair to leave everything to Emily, rather than the son who barely gives us a second thought.

What would you do in my shoes? Split things equally, or give priority to the child who needs it most?
