STEP-SIBLING LOVE
Mum, Im pregnant. Please dont make a scene, my daughter blurted out all in one breath.
Youre joking, arent you? Thats not funny, I waved her off, rolling my eyes.
Im not joking. Its the truth, Emily continued, still surprising and alarming me.
Whos the father? I asked, bewildered.
Jack, she admitted quietly.
Jack? Jack Smith? Your stepbrother? I stared in disbelief.
Mum, youre doing it again. Hes not really my brother. You and Uncle Paul were always trying to shape us into a brother and sister act, but the two of us never saw ourselves that way. Yes, you and Paul brought the families together, but we were never related by blood. Jack and I have always just been ourselves. Were adults now. And now, we want to build a life together. Were going to be a family. It will all be fine, Emily tried to reassure me.
Oh, heavens, when did this even happen? I started to panic. Youre only eighteen, the pair of you! No, I cant believe this
As I listened to my daughters emotional confession, I found myself oddly unsurprised. Emily was speaking about things that, looking back, seem logical. Two teenagers, not related by blood, living under the same roof its like putting a candle next to a fire. The wax is bound to melt eventually.
It all started twelve years ago. I met Paul in Hyde Park. I was there with six-year-old Emily. He had Jack with him, also six at the time. Our kids ran into each other first, and we parents nodded, exchanged awkward introductions, and eventually struck up a conversation. We soon realised we were both single and hoping life had something better in store for us. We swapped numbers and, after a few casual meet-ups, Paul eventually suggested we move in together so the kids could get used to each other. So, Emily and I joined their flat with Jack.
Later, we got married. All those years, Paul and I kept insisting our children should love each other like siblings. And now this! Emily and Jack expecting a baby. Never in my wildest dreams did I suspect this would happen. My stepson now my son-in-law! What will the neighbours say? What will friends think?
When I broke the news to Paul, he just shrugged and said, Thats life. What can you do? No sense fussing. Lets start planning a wedding.
How could we have missed it? The kids shared a sofa bed until they were ten, before we finally upgraded to two fold-out chairs. Not our best parenting, perhaps. Well, children grow up
So, the wedding was hastily arranged. The guests were completely taken aback. Everyone knew our families as one, and suddenlythis! I blushed, paled, and had to deflect the stream of questions with a helpless shrug. Well, its just the way its turned out
With a little too much wine, the guests laughed and shouted, Bottoms up! What a couple like a lamb and a ram, the perfect pair!
Our granddaughter, Olivia, was born. Jack and Emily started to argue more and more. Paul and I kept well out of it; theyd have to sort it themselves. Less than five years passed before Jack declared, Im leaving Emily.
As it happened, he had started another family elsewhere, with a baby already in tow. Emily knew about it but kept quiet.
Emily, didnt you try to stop him, to keep the family together? I pressed.
What for, Mum? she replied calmly. If my husband doesnt love me anymore, why should I try to hold on? I let him go. Thats that.
I like to think shed already put her anger and hurt behind her. Perhaps shed leaned on her friends through it all. After all, you cant carry misery around forever; it eats away at you.
Maybe Jack will come back, I tried to encourage her. You never knowlifes twists and turns! They say you have to get it all out of your system before settling down. Just dont lose heart, Emily.
If he comes back, Ill take him. If he doesnt, Ill survive. No need to throw myself off a bridge, she replied with reasoned calm.
Jack did come back, just under two years later. No bags, no car, nothing but disappointment and a rather obvious depression. He looked like a man defeated.
I really wanted to say, Jack, are you a tennis ball, bouncing from side to side? But I bit my tongue. Theyre young and have to sort it out themselves; Paul and I have learned not to get involved. Emily welcomed her prodigal husband with open arms and forgiveness.
Within a year, our grandson, Edward, was born. The joy was overwhelming, but I couldnt help but worry. Would Jack disappear again? Life is always full of surprises, ones more shocking than anything we can imagine.
Of course, misfortune didnt fully subside before the next storm arrived. Emily fell head over heels in lovewith her boss. Id heard a lot about him. The whole office was after him: the charming, dashing Mr. Brown. His confidence and attention swept Emily away, and soon all reason was lost. At first, they kept things secret, but whispers travel quickly.
Soon, well-meaning colleagues let Jack know what was going on. Its one thing for a husband to leave his familythats a scandal, but when a wife leaves, its utter catastrophe. Jack was shocked at the revelation. But, perhaps feeling the weight of his own past mistakes, he handled it with humility and patience. If you love the bush, you must love the thorns, too. He waited, hoping Emily would come to her senses.
Paul just fuelled the fire, muttering, You cant grind saffron, and you cant curb a wilful girl!
The office affair between Emily and Mr. Brown went on for two years. Emily gave birth to a little girl, Lucy. Around the same time, Mr. Browns own wife gave birth to a son. Quite the multitasker, that one. Emily bore it all in silence, but finally came to her senses. Her bosss mistake wasnt betrayal. Family comes first, and a wife isnt a guitar you can just play a few notes on and then hang back on the wall. The law protects her, after all. Mr. Brown never promised marriage or anything morejust a dalliance, and nothing more.
Naturally, the end of the relationship was excruciating for Emily. But, thankfully, she returned homeheart and soul, if not (immediately) in mind. Jack was at a loss, uncertain how to act with his reborn wife. But the truth is, after a quarrel, love burns even brighter.
Emily let Jack woo her as if they were new sweethearts. As they say, a wife will always amend herself before her husband. And, tacitly, Emilys eyes seemed to say: Now were even, darling husband. Were all square.
Her little daughter, welcomed into the family with open arms, is loved as dearly as the other grandchildren. The little ones are growing up now, and this time, were more carefulthey each have their own bed. Cant be too careful, after all. Edward and Lucys mum is the same, but their dads are different…
