Charlie, I always wanted to confess but never found the courage. I deceived you, you’re not really my husband!

Arthur, I’ve always wanted to confess something but never found the courage. I deceived youyou’re not really my husband!

The old woman sat by her husbands bedside, gently dabbing his warm forehead with a damp cloth.

Arthur, Ive always wished to come clean, but I was too afraid. I tricked you. You were never truly my husband!

The old man opened his eyes, looking at her in bewilderment.

Let me finish, dear, before fate parts us for good and I take this secret with me. Do you remember how you stumbled into our little village after the war?

I was so stunned at first, then I ran straight into your arms. I mistook you for someone else. You looked so much like my husband. The letter had come saying he was gone, and then suddenly, there you were, alive as day.

I thought theyd mixed up the papers and my Arthur had come home. I threw myself at you, but soon realised my mistake. I blushed and apologised afterward, letting you sleep in the shed for the night.

In the morning, you tried to fix the shed door, and a beam fell and knocked you out. I thought for sure Id have to arrange another funeral, but then you started breathing again, and I saw youd survived.

I called the doctor, who said you were a tough old thing, just a bit shaken up with some memory loss, nothing more. Thats when I decided to tell you that you were my husband.

You were strong and handsome, and after such hard times, I just couldnt get by alone with two little ones. When I told you, you believed me.

Later the guilt gnawed at me, but we grew close and fell in love, and I never wanted to change a thing.

But right now, I regret making that choice for you. Perhaps your life would have turned out differently.

Arthur eyed her quietly for a moment, then burst out laughing.

You daft old woman, what other life could I want? I have loved you all my days. I did wander into your village completely by chance, but staying here was entirely my own choice.

The moment I saw you, I fell head over heels. I didnt know how to get on your good side, so I thought Id help around the place. Maybe youd warm to me and let me stick around. Thats when that blasted beam clouted me on the headeverything went black.

When I woke up, you were fussing over me, and the doctor was there. I asked him to pretend my memory had gone so I could bide my time a bit longer in your home.

Then you came to me with your story about your lost husband, and honestly, I was rather glad I didnt have to make anything up myself.

You foolish old thing, the old woman smiled. Why on earth didnt you tell me all this before? We couldve laughed about it together.

I meant to, but life kept us busyraising the older children, and then having three more little ones together, her husband winked. So we spent our years keeping our silly secrets, and in the end, they were nothing much at all.

At least weve sorted it now, she said, or else we would have given our guardian angels a good chuckle with our tales. But please, Arthur, dont you go leaving me just yet. I cant manage without you.

Now, now, dont start with the waterworks, Arthur soothed. Ill be just fine. Enough of this, get yourself to bed now. You know what they saythings always seem clearer in the morning.

They settled down, but she couldnt sleep well. Dark thoughts tossed around her silver head, robbing her of rest.

At dawn, she woke early. His side of the bed was cold and emptyher heart clenched with worry. But there he was, sitting on the porch, pipe in hand. She breathed a sigh of relief. Death had passed them by once more; they would have a few more good years, creaking through life side by side.

Lifes little deceptions and secrets fade with time, leaving only the love and laughter we share. Hold close the ones you cherish, for honesty and kindness outshine all the shadows of the past.
