My Brother Demanded the Money I Had Saved for Years, and When I Refused, Our Mum Reacted in the Most Revolting Way Possible

I live with my mum and juggle two jobs. I pay for my own food and bills, as all of my mums pension goes towards supporting my older brother. I work tirelessly, trying to save enough for a deposit on my own flat. Its a constant struggle to balance my expenses and still put aside money for the home I dream of owning. Even though its tough, I stay committed to my goal through discipline and determination.

Not long ago, my brother asked me to lend him the savings Id built up over the years, saying he needed the money for a down payment abroad. Deep down, I knew Id never see those pounds again, so I calmly refused and explained that I was saving to buy my own place. Unsurprisingly, he didnt take no for an answer and went straight to our mum to complain.

My brothers finances are nowhere near stable. He works as a minicab driver and does odd jobs around peoples homes, so his income is unpredictable at best. On top of that, he and his wife are known for their extravagant spending, always ordering pricey takeaway and splurging on luxury items. They barely scrape by, despite having three children and no permanent roof over their heads.

By contrast, Im careful with money and try to live sensibly. While Im perfectly happy with my old mobile, my brothers wife is constantly on the lookout for the latest iPhone, buying on credit whenever she can. After I refused to lend my brother the cash he wanted, he took offence and told our mum.

Mum tried to persuade me to help my brother, even though hes never paid back old debts. She made me a tempting offer: if I gave him the money, shed sign over her flat to me. But even then, I said noI dont want to wait around for an inheritance or hope for charity.

Though Mum seemed to accept my choice, things quickly escalated when my brother and his family decided to move in with her to save money. They didnt consider my situation at all, leaving me without a place to live. Mum just assumed Id be fine since I had savings, while my brother cut off all contact with me.

Even though things are tense and Im struggling, I know I made the right decision. I refuse to feel guilty for putting my future and dreams first, and Im proud to have managed my hard-earned savings responsibly.
