I had a terrible feeling in my gut. Someone must have found my handbag and was probably thrilled with their luck.
I was in my third year at university.
My mum and dad lived in a small village in the English countryside. Though they werent well-off, they were determined I should get a good education. They’d taken on quite a few debts to see me through school, but Id never once heard them grumble about it. Quite the opposite, they were always supportive and proud of me, encouraging me in every way they could.
At that time, I wanted to do something to help them, so I got myself a part-time job. I began to earn a decent wage, and thanks to that, my parents had almost managed to pay off all the loans.
One morning after a long night shift, my boss rang and paid me my wages, along with a bonus for working so hard. I was over the moon because it meant my parents could finally clear the last of their debts. As usual, I walked home through the park. Feeling rather worn out, I decided to rest for a bit on a bench. It was clear that the night shift had really taken it out of me. After a while, I felt a bit better and headed back to my flat. But when I reached home, I suddenly realised Id left my handbag behind on the bench in the park. All my money and important documents were inside. I rushed out straight away, only to forget exactly where I’d been sitting.
A sense of dread washed over me. Someone must have picked up my bag and been delighted with their unexpected windfall. How could I have been so careless? For half an hour, I ran all around the park, frantically searching, but it was nowhere to be seen. Just as Id lost all hope, I heard someone call my name. I turned around to see a young man standing there, holding out my bag.
“This must be yours,” he said softly.
I couldnt help but hug him in relief.
“I cant thank you enough! My entire wages are in there,” I gasped, almost in tears.
“In that case,” he grinned, “you owe me a coffee. And maybe a slice of cake too…”
That evening, we went for our first coffee togetherand it wasnt the last. Weve been together for four years now.
Sometimes, even in the worst moments, life finds a way to bring us unexpected happiness. Losing my bag taught me that small acts of honesty and kindness can change the course of our daysand even our lives.
