Before Heading Out to Hunt, a Mother Wraps Her Baby in Seaweed

Before heading out to hunt, a mother wraps her pup in seaweed.

On the open coast, this simple act can make all the difference between safety and danger.

Along the bracing shores of Cornwall, British otters have developed a remarkable habit. Before diving beneath the chilly Atlantic for their next mealperhaps shrimp, shellfish, or small crabsmothers tuck their youngsters among the sheltered kelp beds that sway gently near the surface.

The kelp serves as a natural anchor: its roots cling tightly to the sea floor, while the long fronds floating above ensure that the little ones aren’t carried off by the strong current.

Newborn otter pups can’t dive yet. Their fur is the thickest of any animal in Britain, trapping so much air that the pups bob atop the water, floating like little corks.

This fluffy coat keeps them warm, but also leaves them exposed: stray breezes and shifting tides could set them adrift within moments.

Thats why a mother otter carefully envelopes her baby in the kelpalmost like wrapping her child in a natural blanket. Sometimes, she even covers the pups eyes with a frond, soothing and calming her little one before setting off.

Once her pup is safely wrapped, she disappears beneath the waves.

The otter may dive again and again, each time returning to exactly where her young is hidden to check that all is well.

In some of the wildest waters around the British Isles, survival can depend on a slender ribbon of seaweedand a mothers instincts.

Even when the stormiest waves are crashing around them, it is a mothers watchful care that keeps her world together.

Sometimes, in the midst of lifes fiercest storms, its the gentle acts of love and protection that tie us to what matters most.
