My mother-in-law asked us to host her friends, so we welcomed them into our home.

A few years ago, my husband and I moved to another city hed found a great job there. His mother stayed behind, living in a charming two-bedroom flat shed been given after working for more than three decades at her firm. But every summer, shed come to visit us during the holidays.

One peculiar day, my mother-in-law rang and told me her acquaintance was coming to our city for business matters. She asked if we could host him and his wife for a fortnight. My husband agreed and called me to say his mums friends would be staying with us. Supposedly, theyd barely trouble us, as both of us worked late into the evening most days. Theyd cook for themselves or dine out, so it seemed a harmless arrangement. My husbands always been tender-hearted and a devoted son. He decided to help what he believed were pleasant folks. Who could have predicted his generosity would turn against our small family?

While the husband was out all day, handling meetings and managing his affairs, his wife a much younger woman lingered in our flat, restless and lonely. She had no friends in this city, and since we were always at work during the week, she was left to amuse herself.

She soon came up with a peculiar idea: shed go shopping at the larger retail centres with my husband, after first seeking my approval. The notion was that, as a young gentleman, my husband could offer opinions on what new designer clothes suited her best. I, naively, agreed and was relieved to have uninterrupted time to catch up on my own errands and duties.

Thats when a twist arrived, stranger than anything. Tidying up the bedroom with my husband, I swept out several strands of our guests hair from under the sofa. As I changed the bed sheets, I found yet more tucked into the pillowcase the exact pillow my husband slept on. I was staggered. What was this! Was she trying to cast a spell on him? Unbelievable!

I stared at those dyed locks and it felt as if a curtain lifted from my eyes. It was as though shed been angling to win over my husband for quite some time! I remembered spotting her, more than once, flouncing through to the kitchen in alluring nightwear, supposedly “just for some water.” Her feigned surprise Oh, I thought everyone had gone out for the day, and the house was empty felt far too rehearsed. Thankfully, my husband wasnt the fool easily ensnared in obvious traps. He barely noticed her attempts at flirtation.

From that moment on, I never left them alone. I invented believable reasons to accompany them, insisting I needed to go in the same direction. Or I created urgent tasks at home that required my husbands help. All the while, I kept counting the days until these unwelcome guests would finally depart.

From this bizarre episode, I learned a rather logical lesson for the future: its better not to entertain unfamiliar people in your own home. You never know what the young wives of older men, preoccupied with their work, are capable of when left unoccupied and bored. Sometimes those husbands have absolutely no idea what their restless wives might try. For all of you, I recommend a little more caution regarding those strangers life delivers to your doorstep for reasons known or unknown.

“You didn’t just hurt me; you betrayed me. That’s different,” she told her husband.
