Dad has never liked Adam. Hes always been jealous of my boyfriends, but Adam is truly wonderful and I love him with all my heart, so I decided to marry him. With the start of this new chapter in my life involving moving out and becoming more independent, Dad was only really present during holidays or when he came to visit us. Still, he never stopped trying to cause trouble between Adam and me. He spread rumours about my husband, making up stories about seeing him with another woman or spotting an online casino tab open on Adams computer.
He secretly spoke to Adam about me as well, but Adam knew exactly what sort of person my father is. We both saw right through his jealousy, and wed just laugh light-heartedly at his attempts to stir up drama between us.
I think Dad really lost his head when he found out Adam and I are expecting a baby. Mum was overjoyed, but he was terribly offended that no one consulted him beforehand. Determined to make Adam look bad again, he organised a family dinner. Everyone had to cook something, and Adams specialty is seafood. During my pregnancy, Ive had cravings for all sorts of mussels and prawns, so I spent the evening happily devouring the lotuntil I suddenly started feeling ill before we could even leave.
I knew seafood toxicity was a risk, but this felt different. Dad made a huge fuss, an ambulance was called, and I was rushed off. I was diagnosed with food poisoning. There I was, hooked up to drips, terrified I might lose my baby from eating something bad, and Dad kept going on about Adam.
What an idiot! His wifes pregnant and he couldnt even make sure the food was safe What kind of father will he be? Hell end up killing you both.
Thats when I started to suspect him. Adam is so careful; he would never allow anything but the freshest food on the tableespecially since Mum and Dad were the ones who bought everything for the meal. What if Dad purposefully didnt store the seafood correctly, or secretly added something to frame Adam? He still hopes Ill leave him. If he poisoned me, knowing Im expecting and deeply anxious for our childs health, what else might he do to separate me from his unwanted son-in-law?
