Is this seat taken? Emily glanced up and offered a gentle smile.
The expression came naturally, as if she had been doing it her whole life, rather than something shed only truly learned in the last twenty-four hours.
Oliver Bennett, the man introduced himself and sat down. Financial advisor.
He spoke calmly, no pressure. Eyes never straying to the bare skin of her arms, unlike most men that evening, but instead looking straight into hers.
Emily, she replied. I teach. Whenever I have the chance.
Whenever I have the chancethats honest, Oliver nodded. So you understand the value of time.
The waiter placed two glasses of wine before them. Music swelled throughout the lounge; voices rose and then changedsofter, filled with glances cast in her direction.
Emily felt it. It didnt make her uneasy. If anything, it surprised her.
Your jewellery Oliver leaned in just slightly. Is it handmade?
Yes.
You can tell. Everything these days is either mass-produced or flashy. But thisthis has character.
Emily smiled.
Character. No one had said that of her for years.
It was about ten minutes before David drew near. For a moment he stopped a few steps away, as if making sure he wasnt seeing things, then he put on a forced smile.
Emily You did come after all.
His gaze darted swiftly to Oliver. Sharp. Evaluating.
Yes, she said calmly. I changed my mind.
And whos he?
That familiar possessive tone crept into his voice, one Emily knew far too well.
Oliver Bennett, the man stood and offered a handshake. Weve only just met.
The handshake was brief, firm.
David averted his eyes first.
Erm he cleared his throat. Glad youre well.
Ive always been well, David, Emily said softly. You just havent noticed in a long time.
He looked as if he wanted to respond, but suddenly others began to approach. Questions about her jewellery, where shed learned her craft, whether a similar set could be custom ordered.
Oliver remained beside hernot to shield, not to overshadowsimply there.
David paced the hall, agitated. Disappearing, returning, restless.
His colleagues watched Emily with the very respect he had been striving to earn all night.
Is that his wife? she overheard whispered behind her. Id never have guessed.
Later, when dessert was served, Oliver spoke:
Forgive my bluntness. Youre standing at a crossroads. People either step back or move forward. Most choose to go backits easier.
And what about you? asked Emily.
I always move forward. Thats why Ive started over twice from scratch. And why Ive been divorced twice.
Emily laughed.
Not out of politenessgenuine laughter.
You know, she said, today I realised Ive lived all these years as a rough draft.
Well, its time for the final version, then.
As the evening drew to a close, David caught up to her near the doorway.
Emily, wait. We need to talk.
She looked at him without anger. Without resentment.
As one looks at someone from a different life.
Im listening.
I I went too far. With that Im ashamed comment. I was under pressure. The promotion, the expectations you understand.
I do she nodded. You were afraid Id remind you who you really are.
He blanched.
What are you talking about?
Youre not ashamed of me, David. Youre ashamed because without me, theres nothing left of you.
She said it quietly. Which only made her words cut deeper.
Emily, what do you want? A divorce?
She looked round the roomthe tables being cleared, the laughter fading, the evening in which shed finally felt herself again.
No. Respect.
She removed her necklace and placed it gingerly in his hand.
Thats not for people who are ashamed.
He was left standing there, the cool weight of the sapphire pendant heavy in his palm.
A week later, her phone rang.
First, it was a boutique interested in handcrafted jewellery. Then another. Then a gallery.
We were given your number. They say your pieces are one of a kind.
Helen laughed in her ear, while Alice was already making plans.
Emily sat at the kitchen table, sorting through beads, feeling something in her begin to piece itself back together.
David tried to be careful. He brought her flowers. Said, You look lovely today.
But it no longer worked.
Ive filed for divorce, she told him one evening, while the children did their homework.
Over a dinner party? his voice was hoarse.
No. Over twelve years of being invisible.
He fell silent.
For the first timetruly.
A month later, Emily was back at the restaurant by the riverside.
Not for a partya business meeting.
Across from her sat Oliver. Now, her partner.
You know, he said, Im glad you came that evening after all.
So am I, Emily replied, smiling.
These days, I understand the true value of being seenand Ill never settle for less again.
