For 10 Years I Devoted Myself to My Daughter’s Family—Now They Want a Break From Me

For a decade, Ive devoted myself to my daughters family, and now theyve decided they need a breather from having me around.

Its been eleven years since Charlotte, my only child, wed William. He won me over from the startclever, articulate, and every bit the quintessential English gentleman. When Charlotte became Mrs. Thompson, I was absolutely thrilled.

A year after their wedding, the thought of becoming a grandfather filled me with excitement. My health was starting to wane and retirement was looming, so Charlotte suggested I move into their house. Shed need a hand with the baby, so I packed up and settled into their home without a second thought.

For ten years, Ive worked tirelessly in their household. Ive cooked every dinner, handled the laundry, scrubbed floors and cupboards, and raised two grandchildrengiving Charlotte and William the freedom to focus on their careers, enjoy their hobbies, and live without distraction.

Now comes the unexpected turn. Theyre heading off on holiday, taking the children abroad. But Im not coming along. The reason? Apparently, they need some time away from me. After all these years as their unpaid chef and babysitter, this is the thanks I get. Im left bewildered.

Reflecting on this, Ive realised that selfless giving can sometimes go unnoticed, and its important to set boundaries before you lose yourself in service to others.
