With a Single Stroke, I Undid 12 Years of Happy Marriage: How I Lost Everything Chasing an Illusion …

With a single stroke of my hand, I undid twelve years of happy marriage.

With one simple choice, I wrecked twelve years of life together with my husband. Mark was a kind and easy-going man; he always treated me well and made sure I never wanted for anything. Still, I suppose I always expected something more from himperhaps I’d watched one too many dramas on the telly.

When I got married at the age of twenty, I already had a nagging suspicion at the back of my mind that our life together would always seem dull and uninspiring in comparison to the fantasies on the screen.

We lived with Marks parents in a proper two-storey house in the outskirts of Oxford, with our own entrance that allowed us a bit of privacy. Mark travelled often for work, earning enough for us to live comfortably, while I stayed at home to look after our six-year-old daughter. It was during one of his trips, on a quiet evening, that I received a message on Facebook from a man I didnt know. What started as casual online chatting soon turned into secret meetings.

Before I knew what had happened, I couldnt imagine my life without Matt. One day, after Mark returned from a winter holiday, I finally gathered the nerve to come clean about everything. It was the first time I’d ever seen him cry. The only words he could manage were, What more could you have possibly needed?

Now, looking back, I see how badly Id misjudged it all. I had everythinga warm home, a car, coats and jewellery, a daughter who adored me. Mark always tried his best to make me happy, but back then I didnt really understand what happiness meant. Christmas rolled around, and I packed my bags, ringing Matt to come pick me up.

Whenever I visited England from abroad afterwards, Id stay at Mums in Cambridge. My younger sister and her husband had lived there for years, and she kindly gave up her bedroom for me and my little girl for a few days. I truly believed Matt and I would soon be together for good and live the sort of life the films promised, but reality proved harsher. One day, he vanishedignored my calls, blocked my messages, and left me on my own.

When it became painfully clear that he wasnt coming back, I found myself at a dead end. I couldnt continue living with my mum and siblings but had no idea where to go or what to do next.

My family, bless them, tried their best to patch things up. They even took it upon themselves to contact Mark and encourage reconciliation. When I approached Mark, pleaded for forgiveness, I saw that the trust had been broken. He met with me but only to say hed made up his mind to move on and see other people. His parents were flat against us getting back together and said if I returned, we wouldnt be welcome in the family home anymore.

On top of all that, I learned Matt didnt have his own flathe couldnt afford the rent. His mind was fixed on paying back debts and perhaps one day owning his own little place, but nothing was certain. Mark couldnt forgive me. Now, Im left sharing a rented flat in Manchester, splitting the bills with my mum and ex-husband, since I dont have a job.

If theres one thing Ive learned, its that real joy and fulfillment arent found in grand gestures or fleeting excitementtheyre in the things I once took for granted. I thought the grass was greener, but in chasing after shadows, I lost the life that was already full of light.
