Trapped in Finland by a Two-and-a-Half-Year Work Contract, I Returned Home to Discover My Wife Had M…

I had a contract with a company for two and a half years, so I was essentially stranded in Manchester, unable to leave for quite a long time. My wife refused to move with me because she had her favourite job back in London and a poorly mother she wanted to care for.

She came to visit me at least twice a year, for New Years and then again in late spring when she took her holiday. She behaved as usual, always telling me how much she missed me and begged me not to extend my contract, saying she was waiting for me to come home. Last winter, she wasnt as eager for me to return to London, but I thought it was because she knew I was coming. I didnt tell her my exact arrival date I wanted it to be a surprise.

When I arrived home, her mother was unsettled by my presence. She looked confused and flushed, then suddenly went pale.

Im back, I said, now the three of us will be living together.

My mother-in-law was sitting in the kitchen, staring at me as though she didnt recognise me.

How is this possible? Emily has a new husband, she said. What do you mean, new husband? I asked. Six months, theyve been living here. Hes her colleague. She started seeing him after her last visit to you, my mother-in-law explained. She told us youd found someone else too and decided to get divorced. The paperwork was signed ages ago And shes expecting a baby.

That was the most unpleasant and unexpected news I could possibly hear. I hadnt dated anyone in Manchester and never gave Emily any reason to think I was cheating or didnt love her, yet she found someone else nearby and divorced me. She and her new husband were expecting a child I had nothing to return to anymore

My mother-in-law tried to support me and offered to clear out an old flat she let, but I declined. For now, I stayed with my father and his new family, and started looking for opportunities to work abroad again. Emily doesnt even know Im here she doesnt call, she doesnt write, shes happily living her new life. And honestly, I dont want her to know; its a matter of pride. When I finally find someone overseas, then Ill tell her, so she knows how it feels.

From all this, Ive learned that you can never predict what life will throw at you, and sometimes, the people you trust most might not wait for you. It has taught me to rely more on myself and to accept change, no matter how painful it is.
