Diary Entry
What a bizarre ceremonysons-in-law with keys, wives with their own plans!
It started when I came home from a long day at work, hoping for nothing more than a hot shower and a bit of peace. As I opened the front door to my own flat, a deep, unfamiliar mans voice called from the bedroom, Oh, and who are you?
I couldnt help but stiffen. Actually, thats what I should be asking. What exactly are you doing in my bedroom?
Just then, a rather smug-looking blonde in a silk dressing gown appeared at the door, eyebrows raised. Ah, so you must be Harriet! George has told me so much about you, she drawled. Im Charlotte, your fiancé’s sister.
I took in the odd picture. After a draining day, I wasnt quite ready to meet an unannounced in-law in my pyjamas. George is my fiancé, not my husband, I replied, keeping my voice steady. And as far as I recall, neither of us agreed to have guests tonight.
Suddenly, an awkward young man peeped out from behind Charlotte. We came to London for a little holiday, Charlotte cut in, before he could say much. Your brother said itd be fine for us to stay a week.
I headed straight to the kitchen, only to find chaospiles of dirty dishes, takeaway wrappers littering the counters. I wonder when George found the time to mention this plan. He said nothing about visitors this morning.
Charlotte let out a disbelieving laugh and uncorked a bottle of wine from the fridge. Youre so serious! George gave me the keys nearly a month ago. I assumed youd discussed itand honestly, if not, its really no big deal.
No, we havent. And why are you in our bedroom, not the guest room? I asked.
Charlotte just shrugged. The guest rooms tiny, but your beds huge. George said you could crash on the sofa bed for a few nights.
It was hard not to recall the awful evening Id met Georges mother and sisterboth had eyed me up and down like I was unwelcome. So, squaring my shoulders, I said, Im sorry to disappoint you, but this is my flat, my bedroom, my bed. George is here because I asked him.
That earned me an amused giggle. So the rumours are true, Charlotte said. Mum always said you keep George locked up tight.
Im tired, so heres what Ill allow. You may have the guest bedroom for tonight. But youll have to clear out of my bedroom.
Oh, lets just wait for George to settle this, Charlotte huffed. Im sure hell explain how unreasonable youre being.
George arrived soon after, and his sister flounced over, full of complaints. George! Your fiancée wants to throw us out of the bedroom!
He looked wildly confused. Harriet, what on earths going on?
I kept my voice calm. Why did you give your sister a key to my flat?
Our flat, surely, Harriet? I live here too, remember?
I do remember. On my invitation. But that doesnt mean you can hand out keys to family without asking me first.
We retreated to the balcony, where George immediately started tutting, Whats come over you? Its my sisterI promised she could stay.”
And she moved straight into our bedroom?
Its a bigger bed, whats the issue? Surely we can put up with the sofa bed for a few nights.
The issue, George, is that you gave someone else keys to my home without telling me.
Ben isnt a stranger! Hes Charlottes partner.
Ive never even met Ben before tonight, and your sisters hardly a close friend!
So, you dont like my family?
Back inside, I could hear Charlottes voice as she rang their mum. Shes trying to kick us out! George will soon sort her out.
Lets be reasonable, Harriet, George said. Its just a week. If were going to get married, well have to learn to compromise.
With that, he left me alone on the balcony, returning to join Charlotte and Ben in the lounge, all three of them laughing at some private joke, as though my concerns were invisible.
When I returned inside, it was clear none of them cared for my presence or my boundaries. Something snapped within me just then. Two years of support, patience, compromiseall flashed before my eyes.
Out. All of you, I said quietly but firmly. This was my flatmy haven.
They sniggered at some daft joke as the door closed behind them. Heart finally unburdened, I turned towards the takeaway Id ordered earlier, feeling the first rush of a new life. One where my happiness and self-respect were my only terms.
If today has shown me anything, its that standing up for myself isnt just my right. Its the only way forward.
