When Does a Mother Become a Burden? A Tale of Betrayal, Selfishness, and Injustice
It is said that when children are young, they compete to see who loves their mother the most. But as they grow up, and their mother becomes old and frail, suddenly no one wants to look after her.
This is exactly what happened in the family of Peter and Emily. Their mother, Margaret, had given her whole life to them. She worked tirelessly, let go of her dreams, and sacrificed everything she had to offer them a brighter future. She never asked for anything in return, never uttered a single complaint. But when the time came and she needed help, only one of her children was willing to stand by her side.
The Day Everything Changed
Margaret was still an active woman when her life took an unexpected turn. A chilly autumn morning, she had a stroke. She came dangerously close to losing her life. The doctors managed to save her, but she was never quite the same again. Her legs failed to hold her up, her hands shook, and even speaking became a struggle. She could not walk without help and needed constant assistance with eating, dressing, and getting out of bed.
Emily was the first to refuse the idea of caring for her mother.
I cant bring her into my home, she said without hesitation. My flats too small, I have two children who need all my attention, and my husband works late. I just cant take on more.
Peter didnt even stop to think. He knew he could never abandon his mother. He took her into his own home, fully aware of the huge responsibility he was accepting.
His wife, Sarah, understood what this would mean. Caring for an elderly person isnt merely a dutyits a constant sacrifice. Still, she voiced no objection.
Shes your mother. We cant just leave her on her own, she said gently.
Hiring a nurse was out of the question: it was far too expensive. So Sarah became Margarets carer. She helped her get up, dressed her, fed her, and changed the bed at night whenever Margaret couldnt make it to the bathroom in time. Whenever Margaret broke down, ashamed of her condition, Sarah comforted her patiently.
Peter watched day by day as his wife began to wither under the strain. At last, he picked up the phone and called Emily.
Could you at least help us financially? he asked.
I cant afford it, Emily replied coldly. Ive got my mortgage, bills, and the kids expenses. Im just scraping by myself as it is.
So all the weight of responsibility remained on Peter and Sarahs shoulders alone.
When Love Only Travels One Way
Months passed. Thanks to Sarahs care, Margaret started to get a little better. She wasnt fully independent, but with help she could move about and even tried to help with small household tasks.
One evening, her voice trembling, she looked up at her son and asked, Can I stay here for good?
Peter looked at his wife. He saw all she had given up, the exhaustion etched on her face, but she simply nodded.
Of course, Mum, he whispered.
It seemed everything had settled. Until the unexpected happened.
Peter came home earlier than usual and, while taking off his coat, heard his mothers voice in the sitting room. She was speaking on the phone.
Dont worry, love, Margaret was saying warmly, Im going to sell my flat and give you the money. That should help with your mortgage and give you some peace of mind.
Peter felt a chill run through him.
But that wasnt the whole of it.
And whats left, Ill set aside for Lily, she continued. My granddaughter deserves the best start in life.
Lily. Emilys daughter.
Peter walked into the sitting room. His voice was cold and sharp.
Mum. What did you just say?
Margaret turned to him, taken aback for a moment, but soon wore a peaceful smile.
Oh, youre home, dear. Its nothing important…
Nothing important?! His voice shook with anger. After everything weve done for you? After months and months, with Sarah giving up her life to look after you, you want to give everything to Emily?!
Margaret sighed, as though Peter was missing something obvious.
Peter, youve always managed on your own. But Emily well, shes a woman, its harder for her. I have to help her.
A cold fire burned in Peters chest.
Youve always managed on your own.
He had heard it his entire life. When he wanted to go to university, he had to pay his own way. When he saved and saved to buy a house, no one lent a hand. When his father was still alive and wanted to buy him a car, his mother insisted the money go to pay for Emilys wedding instead.
And now, after he and Sarah had given Margaret everything, she once again chose Emily.
Without another word, Peter went to the cupboard, took out a suitcase, and began to pack his mothers clothes.
What on earth do you think youre doing?! Margaret cried out, alarmed.
Im taking you to Emilys, Peter answered coolly. If she matters most to you, she can look after you now.
Peter, no! You cant just throw me out.
Im not throwing you out, Mum, he replied, looking her squarely in the eye. Im just giving you exactly what you chose. You picked Emily. Now you can live with that decision.
When Fairness Disappears
The next morning, Emily stormed into the house, furious.
Have you gone mad?! she shouted. How could you throw our mother out?
Peter met her gaze without emotion.
And where were you when she truly needed you?
I I just couldnt help at the time, Emily stumbled.
But now youre happy to take her money, arent you?
Emily dropped her eyes.
You never really cared for her. Only for the inheritance.
Peter picked up the suitcase, set it by the front door and flung it wide open.
Ive done my part. Now its your turn.
Margaret stood there, tears welling in her eyes. Perhaps, for the first time in her life, she truly understood what shed done.
But for Peter, the moment of reconciliation had already passed.
Did Peter do the right thing? Should children share the responsibility of caring for their parents equally? Or is love nothing more than a transaction that often forgets about fairness? Perhaps the real lesson is that fairness and gratitude are not one-way streets, and family bonds require effort from everyonenot just the willing few.
